Stobart Ford's Latvala Continues His Run

Sat 01 Dec, 04:19 PM

Wales Rally GB's second leg has resumed with the crews embarking upon another loop through the same routes used during the morning runs, starting with a repeat over the Crychan stage within the Welsh forest.

Once again, Stobart Ford's Jari-Matti Latvala has shown that he is in great form today as he began the afternoon by claiming a fourth consecutive stage win. The Finn recorded a quickest time of 10'28"3 as raindrops appeared over the area. "The morning was very, very good," he said. "Now it's a bit more difficult than this morning."

Mikko Hirvonen drove into second position with a total running time only 2.6 seconds longer, with works Ford teammate Marcus Grönholm showing up in the third spot close behind. "I think he tried to put some pressure on me to see if I can stay on the road," Hirvonen commented.

The drivers of the two official Citroën C4s appeared next in line, Dani Sordo just ahead of Sébastien Loeb. Although the Frenchman has not been quite content with simply driving to finish, the title is nearer and he seemed to be feeling a slight nervous anticipation about it as he commented the situation on the trails: "The stones are coming out of some ruts, so I have to be careful. The conditions are good, no fog, no rain."

Taking nearly a dozen seconds longer in making his way through, Henning Solberg took sixth position for the Stobart Ford team. His brother Petter was only 0'00"1 behind in seventh place, but he crossed the finish line with smoke emanating from his works Subaru Impreza and fluid leaking underneath the car. "We have to go and take a look," he simply said.

Matthew Wilson drove his Stobart Ford into eighth place 16.6 seconds down the line, closely followed by Subaru's Chris Atkinson, who continues to struggle with his ride. "It's all we can do," said the Australian. "We're lucky to stay on the road at most corners."

For the third consecutive stage, Mads Ostberg brought his Subaru Impreza into tenth position for the Adapta AS team.

The gap between rally leader Mikko Hirvonen and Marcus Grönholm has hardly moved and stands at 32.2 seconds. Sébastien Loeb's third place stands 36.2 seconds away, while Petter Solberg and Dani Sordo come next over a minute further down.

The Epynt 2 stage will be the next challenge for the contenders.
