Premier League - Fuming Scolari escapes FA rap

Eurosport - Mon, 01 Dec 15:29:00 2008

Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari will not face FA charge over comments made about referee Mike Dean following the 2-1 defeat at home to Arsenal.

2008-2009 Chelsea-Arsenal Luiz Felipe Scolari - 0

Scolari accused Dean of "killing" Chelsea and demanded an apology after Dean and his assistant allowed Robin van Persie's equaliser for Arsenal, which should have been ruled offside.

The Brazilian escaped punishment despite the FA's recent crackdown on criticism of referees as part of the much-maligned 'Respect' campaign.

Sir Alex Ferguson of Manchester United, David Moyes of Everton, Joe Kinnear of Newcastle and Phil Brown of Hull City have all been fined following run-ins with officials this season.

Scolari's comments came after the flag stayed down when the offside Van Persie collected a pass from Denilson on the edge of the penalty area, before smashing the ball past Petr Cech.

He said: "Have you ever heard me speak about referees any time in the games I have been here? Never, in 15 in the Premier League, four in the Champions League, the Carling Cup, I have not said anything, but today is different.

"I do not want the referee to make something different - I want only after tomorrow that he looks at the television, that the referee and the linesman see they are wrong, and they say 'sorry'.

"That is all I want, no more, because they were not good and made a mistake, which I understand.

"I do not want three points, all I want is them to say sorry it was a mistake, because in the first half, the same linesman made a mistake against us with [Salomon] Kalou.

"He is human and he can make a mistake, but the offside has killed my team. I just want them to say they are wrong, because I am wrong when I put some players in, or the players are wrong when they make a mistake in front of goal or are not covering.

"These are all wrong, but the referee is never wrong. I do not think they came here to deliberately make a mistake against us.

"It is difficult to play for my team after this, because they lost their concentration. The offside killed my team."

Van Persie admitted he had strayed beyond the last man but said the goal was payback for one he had incorrectly disallowed against Chelsea in 2005.

He said: "I scored a goal against Chelsea [in 2005]. I was onside, but the ref gave it offside and it didn't count. This time was maybe a little bit offside, but it counted and that's all that matters."

  10. when decisions go against arsenal, people say that referees are human and to err is human.but when it is Man U or Chelsea, then referees must apologise.Uncountable decisions have gone against arsenal this season so scholari shd shut his mouth and look for solution to chelsea's problems.3 yrs ago Sol Cambell was sent off for tackle similar to John Terry's

  14. I believe that that club are in danger of totally losing the plot as they are heavily reliant on the funds from that lot from Siberia, meaning, the minute the plug is pulled, the lot goes down the drain.
This has happened to other big clubs in the past. Leeds United was the best example of how a club was mismanaged into relegation, with many gambles being taken. Abramovich reminds me of just another one of those power greedy, reckless gamblers. At the end of the day, they shall secure their own takings before pushing the self destruct button.

  15. I must admit, I had a lot of admiration for Jose Mourinho. Letting him go has been a big mistake for the club. Not that Avram Grant was bad, he was unlucky not to be given a chance to prove himself. It is those who have no idea of the game who just hire and fire whenever the fancy takes them.

  17. If the ref and linesman have to say sorry for missing the offside then Scolari should have to apologise everytime one of his players dives or cons the ref. And if, like correspondent 160 says, video technology is introduced then it should also be used to retrospectively ban/fine/book/send off players who have broken the rules and had their offences missed by the officials during the game. It works both ways people. Did Chelsea offer to give Arsenal a goal when a Van Persie goal was incorrectly disallowed for offside a few years ago. I don't think so. If everyone continues to give refs such a hard time there soon won't be any refs left. No referees = No football. And no, I'm not a ref.

  19. What is all the bickering about anyway? The more attention you give managers and their players, the more they seem to whine and bicker. Chelsea didn't win as they were not playing good enough to achieve anything in the first place. What is wrong with losing honourably?

    From sappercommando25, on Mon 1 Dec 8:23PM
  20. Chelski have head enough lucky/dodgy decisions go their way in games against other teams, not only Arsenal, ovet the last few years so yesterday was nothing more than them getting a taste of the other side of the spoon, stop whinging about it, you'll be complaining that JT shouldn't have been booked for his two footed lunge next, when any other player would most probably have been sent off for that one!! Stop your crying, grow up & get on with it!!
