Premier League - Islamophobes target Mido

Eurosport - Mon, 01 Dec 10:14:00 2008

The FA are investigating racist chanting directed at Middlesbrough striker Mido during the Tees-Tyne derby against Newcastle.

FOOTBALL Mido - 0

The Egyptian was briefly subjected to Islamophobic taunts while he was warming up at The Riverside, in a repeat of scenes in the same fixture last season.

An FA spokesman told the Daily Telegraph: "We'll have to look at it. We'll speak to the clubs. This will most likely involve working with Newcastle to try to prevent it happening again.

"The police may also be involved in helping identify any offenders because this is potentially a criminal offence. We want to make it clear you can't get away with chants like this."

Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate is hoping the culprits will be caught but does not believe Newcastle should be punished.

He said: "We have to rise above it. If people want to shout those things it's a reflection on them. There's a danger we go on a witch hunt. What do you do? Punish the club?

"They can't do anything about their travelling fans. It's individual decisions to sing what they want. I don't think that's fair. How can a club the size of Newcastle control individuals?

"It's a sensitive one and I understand the importance, but I don't want to put the pressure on an excellent club like Newcastle."

A spokesman for Newcastle added: "The club does not condone any sort of offensive chanting."

  1. So Joeramadi you blame these stupid comments on stress!!!! That is ludicrous. At least kht20 has a valid point and hasn't stooped to the 'My Dad is bigger than your Dad' mentality of most of the users on these article comments. As for you insulting him, you disgust me, you should respect him as he has probably been around a lot longer than you. I can see why you condone these idiots becuase you would probably be in there with them given the chance. It's people like you and the morons who shouted at Mide that give the game a bad name! Grow up!!

Oh noes I've turned into a Geordieophile

  4. joeramadi No 5 .... my point is as I am not ginger, fat and nor do I wear glasses, nor am I black so I HAVE NOT been picked on because of difference. I was saying I don't know therefore what it is like, but I imagine it is very hurtful. Why is it OK to pick on a footballer on the opposing side because he is Islamic. It IS Newcastle Utd's fault because they sold the tickets to their supporters. What a joke 'boosting lesser clubs coffers', if that is the standard of support then stay away please and fester in your own cesspit every home game.

  5. Of all the offensive things I've ever heard shouted at football matches, those directed at Mido can hardly warrant banning an entire group of supporters. Do that and you'll soon find no supporters at any football ground because any away supporter will tell you of far more offensive chants directed towards individuals, groups and races. The real issue here is that someone is able to pick out a certain chant and make a big deal out of it simply because it is deemed islamaphobic. This story stems from a reporter who is a recognised Sunderland fan, that reporter highlighted it at the Middlesborough match last year and surprise, surprise has raised it again in the weekend press. Do you think this reporter really cares about what is chanted at football matches or is there another agenda? You can't pick and choose who to punish, it has to be a universal rule and that would kill football long before it stopped offensive chanting.

  6. Because racism in all forms is infesting football. And the poster was comparing the chanting from fans to the outbursts of a manager.

A valid comparison in my opinion, why should someone in the game be allowed to get away with comments that a fan is rightly condemned for ?

  7. Why is it when there is a story about football clubs on these pages that there has to be a reference to Manchester United. I wish you lot would grow up and just keep to the thread that has been posted!!!!!!

  9. my god, come on KHT20, so what you are saying is that as a ginger - fat - four eyed - bloke no one has picked on you, i think you should add 'deaf' to your description too. It is human nature to pick on any difference in an opponent in a strssfull moment, and normally it is the most obvious difference that is used first. You also think NUFC should be banned because they were purportedly their supporters? What could they have done to prevent it - nothing at all - if anyone could have done something it is Middlesboro, so ban them instead. Newcastle have the largest away support and boost the lesser clubs coffers, so i dont think they would agree with you either. I am supprised someone like you would be interested in football, i thought you would be too busy taking train numbers on york station or hugging trees all weekend.

  10. While I support the condemnation of these idiots. Why is there never a protest about the neanderthals of Manchester when they verbally abuse Arsene Wenger? The FA should investigate all verbal abuse not just racial ones

  11. pathetic biggots they should be banned from football.but newcastle dont deserve to be punished because of a few prats!!!!!

  12. In my 60 years I have never been the subject of abuse because: I wore glasses, was fat, had ginger hair , of my religion, of my colour or anything else for that matter, so I have no idea what it feels like to picked on, singled out or bullied for any reason. I was at the Boro match on Saturday and it was a better match than the newspapers are saying perhaps because of the opposition being who they are. The 'singing' from both sides was on the whole reasonably good natured even if the launguage was a little ripe and aimed at the opposing fans. Reference was made for instance to Newcastle not winning any silverwear for a few decades. Former Boro player Viduka was the subject of some hardcore banter about being overweight and fond of a large paypacket, which no doubt he expected. However the boorish chants from the Newcastle following which greeted Mido were disgusting and quite sick given what has gone on in Mumbai last week. To target anyone including player because of his race is indefensible and I disagree with Southgate when he says Newcastle United should not be given a punishment for the bahavious of their so called supporters. Football doesn't need this sort of behaviour and doesn't need fans like these either. Newcastle United should be banned from bringing fans to another ground for the remainder of the season.
