Premier League - Team of the week

Eurosport - Mon, 01 Dec 15:57:00 2008

Deco has a shocker, while Wigan goalkeeper Chris Kirkland and Everton defender Phil Jagielka are the stand-out performers.

FOOTBALL 2008-2009 Premier League Chelsea Deco - 0

HOW IT WORKS

We tot up the marks out of 10 awarded in five national newspapers - The Sun, The Mirror, The Mail, The Times and The Guardian - to create a total out of 50. The top player in each position will be rewarded with a spot in the team of the week, while the worst scorers will be named and shamed in our Flops XI.

TEAM OF THE WEEK (4-4-2)

Wigan goalkeeper Chris Kirkland has turned his back on England, and it looks as though his club will reap the dividends after his stellar performance in the 2-1 comeback win over West Brom, while Glen Johnson keeps his place after a second successive 38-point-scoring weekend. Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie earn spots after scoring the crucial goals that keep Manchester United and Arsenal in a wide-open title race. And no, your eyes are not deceiving you - that is a Newcastle player nestling snugly in there.

GK: Chris Kirkland (Wigan) - 44

RB: Glen Johnson (Portsmouth) - 38

CB: Phil Jagielka (Everton) - 44

CB: Gary Cahill (Bolton) - 37

LB: Sebastien Bassong (Newcastle) - 40

RM: Gavin McCann (Bolton) - 38

CM: Mikel Arteta (Everton) - 39

CM: Michael Carrick (Manchester United) - 40

LM: Steven Pienaar (Everton) - 40

FW: Wayne Rooney (Manchester United) - 39

FW: Robin van Persie (Arsenal) - 39

FLOPS OF THE WEEK

Only Scott Carson's incompetence prevents an all-Sunderland back-five following the Black Cats' 4-1 mauling at home to Bolton, with Danny Collins particularly singled out for flak. Deco's flawless imitation of Chevy Chase in The Invisible Man makes him stick out like a sore thumb, alongside fellow Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel, while Michael Owen can expect nothing less than to lead the line after managing just 24 touches in Newcastle's stalemate with Boro.

GK: Scott Carson (West Brom) - 27

RB: Pascal Chimbonda (Sunderland) - 24

CB: Nyron Nosworthy (Sunderland) - 23

CB: Danny Collins (Sunderland) - 18

LB: Phil Bardsley (Sunderland) - 25

RM: Tom Soares (Stoke) - 24

CM: Deco (Chelsea) - 21

CM: John Obi Mikel (Chelsea) - 25

LM: Kieran Richardson (Sunderland) - 23

FW: Michael Owen (Newcastle) - 22

FW: Salomon Kalou (Chelsea) - 23

TEAM OF THE SEASON (minimum seven starts)

Wayne Rooney takes over from Manchester United team-mate Dimitar Berbatov in the Team of the Season after his derby-winning goal, while Manchester City midfielder Stephen Ireland pays the price for a loss of form, with Javier Mascherano just pipping him to the central midfield berth alongside Frank Lampard.

GK: Shay Given (Newcastle) - 34.33

RB: Jose Bosingwa (Chelsea) - 33.60

CB: Michael Turner (Hull City) - 34.07

CB: Martin Laursen (Aston Villa) - 33.93

LB: Ashley Cole (Chelsea) - 32.27

RM: Shaun Wright-Phillips (Manchester City) - 34.42

CM: Javier Mascherano (Liverpool) - 34.38

CM: Frank Lampard (Chelsea) - 36.36

LM: Gareth Barry (Aston Villa) - 34.35

FW: Fernando Torres (Liverpool) - 34.71

FW: Wayne Rooney (Manchester United) - 34.27

FLOPS OF THE SEASON (minimum seven starts)

Heurelho Gomes improves his average with a slightly more solid week in between the sticks for Tottenham - although he remains comfortably the worst goalkeeper in the Premier League. Newcastle's Jose Enrique comes into the side with a lowly average of 25.50, by virtue of the fact that fellow left-back Martin Olsson missed the weekend's fixtures and therefore has not played a minimum of seven starts.

GK: Heurelho Gomes (Tottenham) - 27.77

RB: Phil Bardsley (Sunderland) - 28.00

CB: Leon Cort (Stoke City) - 26.57

CB: Tal Ben Haim (Manchester City) - 27.00

LB: Jose Enrique (Newcastle) - 25.50

RM: Geremi (Newcastle United) - 27.33

CM: Amdy Faye (Stoke) - 26.67

CM: Mohamed Shawky (Middlesbrough) - 27.00

LM: Gareth Bale (Tottenham) - 26.82

FW: Dave Kitson (Stoke) - 26.89

FW: Roman Pavlyuchenko (Tottenham) - 26.72
