Stoke boss Tony Pulis has confirmed Stephen Wright has returned to Sunderland after the defender's loan spell expired on New Year's Day.The 27-year-old played his last game for the Potters in the 1-1 draw with Hull before being substituted seven minutes before the end.

That was the right-back's first action since he suffered a gashed head against Watford on December 9 and his 17th appearance in total for Tony Pulis' side.

"Wright will go back to Sunderland," confirmed Pulis on City's official website.

"We can't do anything about it - Roy Keane's decided that he wants Stephen back at the club.

"It's a shame but you can understand Keane's decision.

"We just want to thank Stephen for his effort and commitment, he's a smashing lad and we'll miss him."

Wright admitted he enjoyed his spell at the Britannia Stadium, although he is relishing the chance to break back into the Sunderland side.

"It's been good, I've enjoyed my time here but Roy spoke to me and he said he wants me to go back.

"I think they've got Wigan next in the Cup so I could be involved for that one."

Potters striker Adam Rooney, meanwhile, has extended his loan spell at League Two promotion hopefuls Chesterfield until the end of the season.

The 19-year-old has scored six goals in just 10 starts for the Spireites so far this term.
