Burke Intends To Prove His Worth

Wed 02 Jan, 10:09 AM

Rangers winger Chris Burke is fully committed to the club despite his future being in doubt up to a few weeks ago.

A CIS Insurance Cup outing against Third Division East Fife and a couple of cameo roles in the Clydesdale Bank Premier League suggested the 24-year-old was heading for the exit at Ibrox, either on loan or permanently.

But a couple of surprisingly delightful performances against Motherwell and Hibernian in the last week and all of a sudden one of the many forgotten men of Ibrox could just be one of the driving forces behind this season's title challenge.

The transfer window may officially be open again but Burke has firmly closed the door on a move elsewhere.

"People were asking me questions about my future but this is where I want to stay," insisted the 24-year-old.

"The gaffer gave me the chance of my international debut and I was grateful for that.

"He also gave me a new contract here and that was pleasing as well. Things are going along well and I pray that can continue.

"I'm happy to get a chance back in the team. I'm trying to stay in the team so hopefully I've done enough to play in the next game.

"I don't want to be negative about anything - you do that and it affects you.

"Obviously I would have liked my chance earlier but the team was playing well and it was difficult to get in.

"I got my chance against Motherwell and I thought I played quite well in that game and then again against Hibs."

Burke and Steven Naismith on either flank complemented striker Daniel Cousin perfectly as Rangers won 2-1 at Easter Road on Saturday in a victory which was far more convincing than the scoreline suggested.

"I was asked to play wide and obviously I did enough to show I can do that," said Burke. "It's good when you're more involved.

"Sometimes wingers are quite isolated at times and are not involved for long periods of the game. But I was happy with my contribution.

"Looking at all the players who are left out, not even on the bench, I'm just thankful now that I've got my chance to play.

"I'm doing all I can to play at my best and show that I want to stay in this team.

"At the start of the season the manager said 'Every single one of you should be challenging for the title'.

"That's what you need to be winning titles and cups."

The postponement of the Old Firm derby after the death of Motherwell captain Phil O'Donnell means Rangers are next in action when Dundee United come calling this weekend.
