The third seeded Briton will next face former Australian Open champion Thomas Johansson in the quarter-finals after the Swede beat Germany's Michael Berrer 6-3 7-5.

The 20-year-old Murray looked lethargic in the opening set, dropping two early breaks to Schuettler due to a string of first-serve errors.

The 31-year-old German, meanwhile, looked like the same man who won the tournament in 1999 and reached a career-high of fifth in the world in 2004, dropping just one point on serve in the first set.

The Scot quickly turned his fortunes around in the second set, however, holding serve comfortably before striking with an early break thanks to a series of unforced errors from the wild card.

Murray, ranked 88 places higher than Schuettler at 11th in the world, never looked back winning nine straight games before the German finally held serve in the fourth game of the second set.

"I am pleased with the way I hung in there and won. I changed my style of play in the second and third sets. I came to the net more and used the slice shots," Murray said.

After breaking for a fifth and final time the third seeded Dunblane native saved a break point in the final game before wrapping up the victory in one hour and 33 minutes with a service winner on match point.

Top seeded Russian Nikolay Davydenko, meanwhile, eased past France's Fabrice Santoro 6-3 6-3 to reach the quarter-finals in Qatar.

The world number four will face eighth seeded compatriot Dmitry Tursunov, who advanced without playing a second-round match after Germany's Nicolas Kiefer pulled out of the tournament with a right shoulder injury prior to the match.

Another German, the sixth seeded Philipp Kohlschreiber, booked his ticket to the last eight by beating Italy's Filippo Volandri 6-4 6-1.

He will face Croatian fourth seeded Ivan Ljubicic, who also advanced when Serbian Janko Tipsarevic pulled out of their second-round duel with a fever.

Argentina's Agustin Calleri and Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka rounded out the quarter-finalists after beating Korean Hyung-Taik Lee 6-3 6-1 and Belgian qualifier Christophe Rochus 6-2 7-5 respectively.
