The American had a clause in his existing deal specifying he would get the extension if he played 20 league games this season.

Hahnemann has been ever-present for the Royals, meaning he is rewarded with a contract that will keep him at the Madejski until June 2009, when he will be 37.

However, Hahnemann's future could still lie away from the club as he is unhappy at Reading's refusal to give him a longer deal.

"They are happy with the year I have left," he said earlier this season. "They don't want to give me anything, which is great after playing 250 games for them. The whole idea is that you show loyalty and they show it back but I guess I have to wait for mine to come to me.

"I knew that they would make excuses not to give me a new deal. I have to accept it. For the last few weeks, I knew this was coming. I've been a bit miserable because I just knew it was going to happen.

"The bottom line is that I'll either be here next year or I won't. I can't do anything about it. I can't make them give me a new contract, all I can do is play well. My attitude is that I was going to finish my career here. That's always what I've wanted. Maybe that will happen."
