Premier League - Given eyes Newcastle exit

Eurosport - Fri, 02 Jan 14:21:00 2009

Shay Given's lawyer has said the Newcastle goalkeeper is considering his future after reaching the "lowest point of his football career" during last weekend's 5-1 drubbing at the hands of Liverpool.

2008 Newcastle Shay Given - 0

The future of the Magpies goalkeeper has come under increasing scrutiny in recent weeks with Arsenal, Tottenham and Manchester City believed to be interested in signing the 32-year-old, who was in inspired form against the Reds despite the scoreline.

Newcastle boss Joe Kinnear this week insisted Given would not be allowed to leave in the transfer window, saying the Republic of Ireland international was "very happy" at the club.

But Given's lawyer, Michael Kennedy, claims the player "feels compelled to consider his position" due to "turmoil on and off the pitch" at St James' Park.

In a statement released late on Thursday night, Kennedy gave the strongest indication yet that Given is about to bring an end to his 11-year association with the Barclays Premier League outfit

"Shay is very despondent following the very poor performance of the team against Liverpool last weekend," read Kennedy's statement.

"It was the lowest point of his football career and a performance that he would not wish to be repeated.

"When he signed a new five-year contract in 2006 it was on the basis that the club would challenge for major honours, but on the present evidence all that he can see ahead with the turmoil on and off the pitch is a battle for survival.

"Having served the club loyally for over 11 years, Shay feels compelled to consider his position in the light of the interest being expressed in him by Manchester City, Arsenal and Tottenham."

Sunday's crushing defeat against Liverpool marked Given's 459th appearance for the Magpies since joining from Blackburn in a £1.5million deal in 1997.

Newcastle's well-documented tribulations over the past few months took a fresh twist last weekend when owner Mike Ashley took the club off the market after failing to find a buyer for the Tyneside club.

  1. I'm a Liverpool fan and I hugely admire Shay Given, I have always rated him and he's proven to be one of the Premier League's finest goalkeepers but with the current situation going on at St James' Park, I don't blame him for wanting to move on... He's given nothing less than 110% for the 11 years he has been there, and just look at how they repaid him, at the wrong end of the table edging even more closer to the relegation zone... Mr Ashley has to provide the Joe Kinnear the cash he needs to bolster his squad or the club could be playing in the Coca-Cola Championship next season.

  4. If only the other so-called Newcastle footballers had had the same commitment over the years as Shay Given has shown season after season after season. NUFC would not be lounging at the bottom of the Premiership now.
I honestly can not blame Shay Given wanting out of SJP, if the reports are correct. He`s given his best years to NUFC and gained nothing in reward for the commitment. He has seen great players enter but then leave NUFC after a few seasons and he has seen real rubbish players come to SJP and stay for too long because no other team wants them.
1969 was the last time NUFC won anything of value and 1955 since they won the FA Cup.
If you do leave Shay, you won`t get any moans from me mate, I`ll wish you all the best.

  6. Newcastle still have Steve Harper and two excellent prospects in Fraser Foster and Tim Krul. If Given is not prepared to stay and fight it out let him go and get in some a huge transfer feel for him. I still can't see how this guy thinks he is so much better than his colleagues. If this is attitude would you want to play with him again. The top four or five as it now is if you include Aston Villa, who by the way bought and excellent keeper in Brad Friedel and look where they are, have never made a serious move to buy him before. This is his second transfer request because things have not gone his way. I witnessed the humilition by Liverpool but I will be back, will you Shay.

  7. I hate to admit it but I wouldnt blame him if he went, he prevented double figures against the scousers he is a genuine class act. Trouble is if he goes owen will be next, then martins, then duff, then butt and before we know it we'll be in the championship next year with sunderland. FATTY ASHLEY - NO ONE WANTS TO PLAY FOR THE CLUB WHILE YOU ARE THERE RUINING THINGS!!!!

  8. I think the only reason Newcastle are still in premiership is this outstanding keeper.I am a Liverpol fan with nothing but admiration for your keeper,His job is increasingly difficult with a defence that falls asleep so often, also on the other hand Owen has not even earned a weeks salery from you guys yet, since leaving us for european glory he never got,his goal hunger has snowballed, you need goals as well as trying to keep a clean sheet.I hope you guys pull out of this mess you seem to be living in and get a bit of stability.keep Given ,you need to build a strong team for him to gain confidence in your whole team.Newcastle are too big to be sitting at the wrong end of the table.

  9. I'm a newcastle fan and while I think someone like owen owes the club another year I feel we owe it to shay to let him move on after years of saving us stuck behind a dodgy defence he deserves to try and win something which I can't see us doing for a while yet. If you go then I wish you all the luck wherever you end up

  10. Given needs to consider his legacy and trophy cabinet, he's already a multi-millionaire, now needs some medals and he's not gonna get any at NUFC.Goal keepers are not supposed to be the man of the match it means the rest of the team infront of you are pants.Needs the protection of a Liverpool or Arsenal defence.

  11. i wouldnt mind if given go to ac milan coz they need a better keeper. he has done a mighty fine job and its time for him to achieve great things. but not to man city or spurs please, they are just arent worth it.

i think harper would do a fine job as a 1st team gk

  14. as a newcastle fan i would be gutted if given leaves cos he is d one player on the team who probably has any quality. just look at btheir last match he conceded 5 goals and was newcastles best player. if he goes " GOD SAVE NEWCASTLE"

  15. if u'd ask me i'd sell him to man city which will give 50 m and a swoop for zableta(right back) who act as a cover for beye and also he is argentenian who will link up very good with(Right Central Back)colocinni and (RWM) jonas.and more money to bring LB Greth bale or vargas or any one who is very good and extra money give by that fatty to buy two midfielder (migual veloso, nucha gonzalez,or some one who is a international player).and again in case of owen why can't JK see that owen is far to slow and poor against the likes of inter's David Suazo(currently on loan with benfica),Adriano(brazilian international) who are currently rumoured to do a swap deal between owen or any one of their off loading striker.

  16. OK Given, you have had a great season. But in previous years I have watched you rooted to your line while the ball flies all around your box and your excellent shot stopping often comes as a result of you not commanding your area. I don't blame you for leaving while the the club is in this turmoil but are you really as good as you think you are. Good luck Shay and thank you.

he should stay and show loyalty? What kind of idiotic 'thinking' is running through your mind? seriously, he could have left five years ago and he would have still shown loyalty by staying at the club for just six years. Eleven years is a hell of a long time and no one can question his loyalty.
And to comment 52, let him play 500 games then let him leave? Sounds like a prison sentence and Shay owes nothing more to Newcastle your ignorant @#$%

  20. gutted. hope he dont go but wouldnt blame him. he is one of the most loved players ever to play for nufc. hes massive for us, its a shame, for years we have had 1 of the best keepers and strikers(shearer) in europe but the rest of the team has usually been not up to it, hes the man, any club he goes to would not believe how good he is. i hope hes just sending a message to the board to get their act together, i hope its just a threat but if he goes i dont think there is a man who would blame him. he has served the club fantastically and i wish him well whatever he does.
