Cobblers hit Robins' play-off hopes

Sat 02 Feb, 08:15 PM

Adebayo Akinfenwa struck three minutes from time to earn Northampton a deserved 1-1 home draw as Swindon's play-off push stumbled. The Cobblers substitute - who almost joined the Robins in the summer - planted a firm header from six yards out from Danny Jackman's corner as Northampton finished strongly.

Swindon had taken the lead through the softest of goals when substitute Blair Sturrock nipped in front of his marker to turn in Miguel Comminges' long throw on 56 minutes.

Swindon, denied the services of £200,000 signing Simon Cox following a contract dispute with Reading, struggled to break down a well-organised Northampton team and the Cobblers keeper Mark Bunn's first action was to turn over Anthony McNamee's 53rd minute cross.

Mark Little's superb tackle on Lee Peacock six yards out prevented Swindon doubling their lead and Northampton, coming into the game on the back of three successive wins, finished strongly to claim a point.

The Cobblers might even have stolen all three points at the end when Jonathan Hayes found himself unmarked at the far post in injury time but blazed his shot wide from a tight angle.
