Murray double downs troubled Alex

Sat 02 Feb, 07:00 PM

Glenn Murray scored twice on his Brighton debut as the Seagulls eased to their first win since January 1 with a 3-0 victory over Crewe.Murray, Brighton's most expensive signing for 25 years - at £300,000 from Rochdale - netted either side of a goal from Guy Butters to kill off relegation-threatened Crewe before the break.

Injury-hit Crewe, with only one win in their last 15 games, had chances to get back into the match but midfielder Byron Moore missed three good opportunities.

Murray pounced to give his new side the lead on 21 minutes from point-blank range after Butters headed down a corner from Dean Cox.

Eugen Bopp saw a shot rebound off the crossbar on the half-hour and Nicky Forster had a low shot saved before veteran defender Butters doubled the lead with a volley from 14 yards.

Murray further punished Crewe's ragged defence a minute before the interval by volleying home at close range after Forster flicked on a Cox cross.
