Thompson strike sinks Bees

Sat 02 Feb, 07:31 PM

Garry Thompson's sixth goal of the season gave Morecambe a deserved 1-0 victory at Barnet to boost their push for a play-off place.Albert Adomah almost made a dream start to his home debut for Barnet but fired wide on five minutes with the goal gaping.

Morecambe were guilty of equally wasteful finishing on 21 minutes, unmarked skipper Jim Bentley volleying wide from 12 yards.

The Bees were within an inch of the lead on 49 minutes when Neal Bishop's free-kick from the left was not cleared by the Shrimps defence and Jason Puncheon's shot from 12 yards hit the inside of the post.

Josh Wright then forced visiting keeper Shwan Jalal to tip his 30-yard effort to safety minutes later.

Morecambe responded with leading scorer Carl Baker's stinging shot palmed away by Lee Harrison but slack marking by the home defence at the resulting corner allowed Thompson to score at the second attempt after Harrison had beaten out his initial shot.
