New signing Scott Vernon is confident Colchester can avoid relegation after rejoining the club from Blackpool. The 24-year-old, who had a loan spell at Layer Road 18 months ago, joined the Championship's bottom club on a permanent deal late on transfer deadline day.

"I believe we can get out of it," said Vernon. "I want to be playing Championship football with Colchester next season and I am sure the lads will all pull together to try and make that happen."

Vernon admitted that his previous spell at the club had played a major role in his decision to move.

He added: "I signed very late, I don't think it was officially approved until Friday, but I am happy to be back at Colchester.

"I know some of the players and the manager and the supporters are great and I know the club, and that was a factor in me coming here. I am happy with my decision. I have played here before and I know the club."
