Australian Open - Nadal wins Australian Open epic

Eurosport - Mon, 02 Feb 09:07:00 2009

Rafael Nadal captured the Australian Open title with an enthralling 7-5 3-6 7-6 3-6 6-2 win over Roger Federer, denying the Swiss a chance to win a record-equalling 14th Grand Slam title.

Rafael Nadal after winning the 2009 Australian Open - 0

The world number one became the first Spaniard to win the Open and chalked up his fifth straight win over Federer, including last year's French Open and Wimbledon finals.

The victory took his Grand Slam tally to six and left him needing only to win the US Open to complete the full set while reducing Federer to tears.

"God, it's killing me," Federer sobbed during the presentation ceremony.

"Rafa congrats, you played incredible, you deserve it man. (You) played another fantastic final."

Nadal offered a consoling word to his great rival after receiving the winner's trophy and a cheque for A$2 million from the only person to have twice completed the Grand Slam.

"For me to receive this trophy from Rod Laver is a dream for me," Nadal said. "It was an amazing two weeks for me."

"Roger, sorry for today. I really know how you feel right now.

"It's really tough (but) remember you are a great champion, one of the best in history and you have proved that."

The final at Melbourne Park lived up to all expectations as the two best players of their generation slugged it out for almost 4-1/2 hours in a classic match packed with magical shotmaking and intense drama.

The momentum swung back and forth throughout before Nadal struck the killer blow when he broke in the fourth game of the deciding set when Federer slapped a backhand into the net then again in the eighth game to seal a famous victory.

Nadal, showing no signs of fatigue despite his five hour, 14 minute victory over compatriot Fernando Verdasco in the semi-finals, started the match full of energy and was still running as strongly as ever at the end.

He broke Federer in the opening game and despite twice losing his own serve, he wrapped up the first set in 58 minutes after the Swiss master overcooked two backhands.

Nadal was again the first to break in the second set when Federer mistimed a forehand over the baseline but the three-times Australian Open champion won the next four games to level the match.

The pair maintained their extraordinary standard of play in a third set that was even more enthralling than the first two.

There were no service breaks in the set but Nadal saved three break points in the ninth and 11th games while world number two Federer survived a set point to force the tie-breaker.

While Nadal lost the first point on his serve, he regained his composure to win four on the trot after they were level at 3-3 to grab a two sets to one lead.

The pair traded breaks early in the fourth set before Federer, a 13-times Grand Slam winner, saved five break points in the fifth game then broke Nadal in the next to seize the initiative.

Federer safely held his two games to force the match into a deciding fifth, the first time an Australian Open final had gone the distance since Mats Wilander beat Pat Cash in 1988, the same year the tournament switched from Kooyong to the current site at Melbourne Park.

  1. Trust me Federer will not win any ATP and Grand Slam Tittle this year.He was just lucky to reach the finals in Australia.

For me the best player and most talented player is the player who win every match and would accept his defeat with no pain period.Hope RF fans out there understand............

  2. @313, u don't need to wait until rafa 28, that's too long, just wait for another 3 or 4 years, he will be in the record book.. ;-)

  3. People who doesn't like Rafa always say Rafa strength only on his muscles. Is it too hard to admit that Rafa is very skillful and talented tennis player?
Rafa has all to be the great...

  4. BOBO m. U R ABOSULOTELY 100% CORRECT
its really very hard to play with a very consistent defensive players and most of the time you comment the error.
Cesar David - what brilliance you are talking about Rafa, I wud rather play and lost that way Fed play rather than our muscles my opponent. - Health is not issue here with regards to Rafa but again he ask for a masseur not a medical doctor, because whether he accepts it or not, that year end withdrawals and participating the Year End championship games, he already prepared himself for 2009.
no doubt that Fed / Nad era is the most exciting and intriguing in the history of tennis
pipol, if nadal dont have very powerful game, do u think he can beat Federer ( federer dont have power game but skills and brilliant shots)
just let the experts declare who is the BEST EVER.
and its too early to write nadal, wait for him to reach 28 or 30 , then lets see who he really is in the history.

  6. truly, now people everywhere knows that for all his exploits, Fed will never compare to the brilliance that is Rafa. Everyone who is behind Roger must be smiling knowing that Rafa wasn't there for the past 13 slams otherwise, he wouldn't have actually reached that number and, if Rafa continues to improve, will never be able to get past 13. ha! unlucky $hit, he probably cried in his sleep. anyway, this victory is a slap in the face of all those organizers who rigged the tournament in favor to that crybaby, i mean come on, if anyone deserves that extra day of rest it should have been the number one seed, seriously, you just can't do that, you can't give an extra day of rest to someone who's world number two...and read that carefully...WORLD NUMBER TWO...not number one...because that's Rafael Nadal, and that's going to stay that way people, GET USED TO IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and KKL E, you can imitate Fed all you want, but there will always be the person who will play like Rafa and whoop your butt from end to end of the court!

  7. No matter how many times Nadal won against Federer, I only want to play my tennis as cool as Federer's form instead of Nadal's. I just think most of the time Nadal just plays as a wall to spin back the ball to his opponent and wait for the error. He won but it is a tricky win. To certain extent it is not honorable. ( Federer is over the top already and actually he almost lost and out in quarter final already, yet his skill is perfect , skillwise, he is the no.1 )

  8. I was a bit sad watching this one. Federer had so many chances to take it but couldn't. I think Nidal has not only right-sized Fed (historically) but has put some kind of lock on him to where I can't see him winning many matches against Rafa on any surface. Federer's play was just too passive and indecisive, certainly not the play of an all-time great!

  9. In my opinion, highly motivated Nadal is unbeatable at the moment. Except serve and maybe few forehand volleys, Roger was on top level today (4 sets)! Fantastic forehands,
unbelievable backhands, amazing angels from both sides, great moving around the cort, good defense too, but whole "package" from Rafa was simply to good for Roger again, especially superb defensive skills. Anybody who play amateur tennis, knows how hard is to beat a really good defensive player. Roger has the same problem with Rafa and his game, based on heavy spined, high bouncing balls. It's very hard to hit winners when u stand few meters behind base line. You have to step in and take ball earlier, but number of errors will rise for sure, because timing to make that kind of shots must be perfect. Rafa's game is almost mistake-less ,either he play aggressive or defensive, which must be very destructive for Roger's mind and nerves. Obviously, he is not able to play constantly good to brake that huge barrier, first of all mentally, possible even physically. That's why so many mistakes in crucial moments. Big problem to solve, he can't expect short balls from Rafa in finals like this. Crying? Did someone took his lollipop? Anyway this was the best tennis match i have ever seen, and i hope we'll see a lot more finals between Rafa and Roger.
    P.S. Coach instead Miroslava ???

  11. According to me Federer has got some kind of Nadal-complex. He seemed sort of blocked somehow, especially when he had breakballs. It was not Nadal who the game, it was Federer who lost it. But Congratulations to Nadal anyway.

  13. If Federe's time is up, as some biased people seem to think AND after his spectacular performances in the 1/4s and semis, does that mean that every other player on the planet should give up because they can't match up to Nadal, so they shouldn't play any more?
I've never heard anything so ridiculous. Roger has got the the semi at least of the last 18 Slams and won 13 of them. The couple that he went out in the semis, he lost to the eventual winner. Rafa is a great athlete but has never got to the USO final or the final of the Master Cup at the end of the Year. He is a worthy no 1, but until he can do at least those 2, he will not have reached the same level as Federer.
BTW, I am female and I've said for years that the girls shouldn't get the same prize money as the men. Just take the last 3 rounds of the ladies event & the last 3 rounds of the mens & see who really did earn their prize mney.

  17. Well Nadal is the best with less rest and such a long game he played before Federer should of won having 2 days rest so super fit and full of energy but it didn't happen. If Nadal had the same rest period then it would of been easier for Nadal and he would of won the game quicker. So Federer was lucky .
