Premier League - Chelsea appeal Lampard red

Eurosport - Mon, 02 Feb 16:47:00 2009

The FA have received a claim for wrongful dismissal from Chelsea over Frank Lampard's red card in the defeat at Liverpool on Sunday.

FOOTBALL 2008-09 Premier League chelsea's Frank Lampard is sent off by referee Mike Riley - 0

The England international was sent off for a challenge on Xabi Alonso in the second half at Anfield.

The pair collided when Lampard slid in to take the ball ahead of the Spaniard, causing the Liverpool man to kick the Chelsea player's studs.

Referee Mike Riley was two yards away and immediately brandished the red card believing that the 30-year-old's studs were dangerously high.

"I only ask that the referee and the men from the FA look at the video," Chelsea manager Luiz Felipe Scolari told the club's website.

The former West Ham midfielder is set to miss league games against Hull and Aston Villa and the FA Cup fifth-round clash with Watford.

The FA will review the decision on Tuesday.

Chelsea defender Jose Bosingwa may also face an FA inquiry after the Portuguese international stamped on Liverpool's Yossi Benayoun in the dying minutes of Sunday's defeat, an act which went unpunished by Riley.

"Bosingwa was not correct. He made a mistake and maybe he has punishment (to come)," Scolari added.

"But if Bosingwa has a punishment ... maybe they change Lampard's red card and maybe he plays the next games."

  1. Its about time footballer's acted like sportsman, ref's need all the help they can get. The Fourth offical should watch the game on a monitor and let the ref know via his earpiece whats going on!Whats the point of it?do they listen to the radio? Diving, pretending to be injured, just a bunch of cheats!EVERY TEAM HAS THEM.Great for all our youngsters. With the amount of money in football they need to clean up their act. They cheat at any cost in the name of sport!L/Pool were the better side but helped on their way by Riley..Notice how many bad decisions where made during the game.Any reds fans won,t be arsed now 3pts are in the bag!!FOOTBALL NEEDS TO CHANGE,starting at the top. Worst display of the season from players and officals.Chelsea are out of the title race now but only had a slim chance before sunday's game. Scolari out!Bring back JOSE!

  3. I wouldn't let Mike Reilly referee my local club game let alone Chelsea-Liverpool.
Like most refs in the uk he made a decision that changed the game. I believe the game would have finished 0-0 if it hadn't been for Reilly's @#$% up. Lets have some action replays to help idiots like Reilly who are unable to see from 2 yards away.

All Chelsea needed was that other dirty scum bag Terry to join Lampard and Bosingwa. What a very dirty team they are, How many red cards do they get per year these days.

  6. We know that some referees are planted to decide the direction of premiership to the favour of certain side, last sunday red card and cheap penalty shares the same parent, recall which team was granted many cheap penalties in 2006/07 premiership, where some one keep running and dive, even when a referee decide it is a deving, he don't show yellow, compare the first round match between chelsea and tot'm spurs, look to the second round match between bolton and chelsea, where an obvious deliberate ball touch inside 10m was not a penalty take, where drogba was trying see the goalkeeper. we have many many incidences past 10 years to now. FIFA should look around Premiership it is poor league in the world, only because bad decisions have been made purposely and protected but not in favour of Arsenal or Liverpool, they play their natural game.

  9. I'm a Chelsea fan & have to say that Liverpool did play well , they had more chances to score, than Chelsea , but i think that game would have finished 0-0 .M.R got it totally wrong, shame because i thought he was the only one "best referee " in England .Lampard did not deserve it the red card.....I think Scolari need a "red card" forever .

  15. so bosingwa gets away with the kick in the back, so now there can be a free for all, as it is setting a pressidant, remember cantona the famous kick, well if bosingwa had kicked any harder he also would have hit a fan,as for lampard, he set himself up for that by going to the papers about alonso beforehand and i don`t know how many players kick a ball in a 50-50 with their studs, look at it again, studs showing,,,

    From pgm192, on Mon 2 Feb 5:17PM
  16. tomkbms - your comments typical of the highest level what more can we expect from a bias ManU supporter. Yes, studs were high, game was fast tempo but lets not deflect from the fact that the one man who had ultimate control of the game - Mike Riley was @#$%!

  17. I am a United fan and watched the game. Lampard did not deserve a red. Watching the slow motion you could see that Alonso was lucky not to get a red also. Lampard went in and won the ball with a high foot. Alonso missed the ball as he was trying to kick Lampard.

From tomkbms, on Mon 2 Feb 5:03PM
  18. I am a Liverpool fan & Frank Lampard did not desrve a red card. Worryingly was the standard of Mike Riley decisions. He appears to like being centre of attention, more than getting things right.
Liverpool & Chelsea games are usually tight & sometimes Titanic, yesterday Chelsea were a shadow of the teams lead by Grant or Jose (special one).

  19. lampard is a legend that was a fair good challenge he got the ball fair and square. however bosingwa shuld be banned for 3 games minimum and fined quite a lot fo cash u just dont kick someone in the back, even if he is wasting time its a tactic , u cant say chelsea havnt done it... bosingwa u dirty buthole

From scumyspurs, on Mon 2 Feb 4:35PM
  20. some people are crazy talking about Bosingwa's kick ...some people said they havent seen it before happening in football, well if they havent seen it before , i bet they have seen it now .That nuisance benayou was wasting time , so he deserves a kick and again it was Mike Riley's action against Lampard that triggers Bosingwa action . Riley spoilt the game by giving Lampard a red card, his head like coconut , we keep talking about players making mistake and been purnished , what about someone like Mike Riley???? He should be relegated to a lower division to go and ref, or be made to pay a fine too
