African Cup of Nations - Nigeria bid for Egypt's Shehata

Eurosport - Mon, 01 Feb 15:01:00 2010

Egypt coach Hassan Shehata said it would be an "honour" to coach Nigeria at this summer's World Cup, but only on a temporary basis.

FOOTBALL Egypt coach Hassan Shehata - 0

Nigeria coach Shaibu Amodu is under increasing pressure after his side disappointed at the African Cup of Nations in Angola, despite a third-place finish.

The Super Eagles looked disorganised and unmotivated, with fans and pundits in Nigeria concerned at a lack of control over a squad filled with superstar egos and meddling officials.

The Nigerian FA feel that Shehata, a tough disciplinarian with a meticulous approach to tactical and physical preparation, would be the perfect man to get the best out of its underachieving team.

"They expressed an interest in hiring me to take charge of their team during the World Cup," Shehata told the TV station Modern Sport.

"It would be a great honour for me to work at the World Cup, but the Egyptian FA will have the final word on whether I can work with Nigeria on a temporary basis."

Egypt failed to qualify for the World Cup after a narrow 1-0 one-off play-off defeat to Algeria, who they beat 4-0 in the African Cup of Nations semi-finals.

Nigeria face Argentina, South Korea and Greece in Group B of the World Cup in South Africa.

  1. ah i will bet on Nigeria not passing the first round and get humilliated if shahata takes over as a coach of nigeria cos there would be no helping hand of referees to gove him advantage over the opponent fact is half the african referees are dating ehyptian girls every times they have a diciding match the CAF sends a retiring referee who gives Egypt the advantage if you look at the match between the KIDS from GANA who were cheated from a foul leeding to echit to score the winning coal and the agressivity of their players with many fouls
my worries is the african football has progressed but the referees haven t hope FIFA will address the issue and geht neutral referee from europe or asia don t get me wrong there are some good uncorruptible referees in africa but only few of them get the chance to officiate a flash MATCH ask the cameroon team and ivory coast and others when they visite echit they will tell you how bad they were treated in echit so good luck Nigeria and all African teams make us proud in the wold Cup

  2. Take a deep look at the leaders, and you will understand the followers. It is only God Himself can have mercy on Nigeria to get rid of corruptions, egos and all that discredit Nigerian all over the globe. A nation that could be to Africa what America is to the world, a nation with blessed resources, but evil corruption, We know the answer to our problems, but not able to do anything because of the powerful that have the money and power on their side. God will move on behalf of the silence millions that hoping for change.

  3. My fellow African(nigerians),i always gets hurt when Nigeria,i see as the country to steer Africa to the next level of development in all fields,is challenged with obstacles that can be solved with their level of educated talents at home and abroad. You guys must sit up and weed out the unpatriotic citizens and be serious with the patriotic ones who arewilling to kill themselves for their country.

    God bless Africa and Nigeria.

  4. Just want to say that the NFA trying to hire or loan Eagyptian national coah is not because they are concerned with winning the world cup, rather its a move by those incharge to convert the world cup arrangements to a more lucrative personal enterprise than the African nations cup contest.
Secondly, the issue of home base or non-home base players, coaches and/or managers is inmaterial. Haven said that anyway, there is need to encourage our indigeenous talents, but can you guaranty thier behaviours when they too gets to the limelight, like some of those Nigerians currently playing abroad who have taken for granted the disorganised and corrupt NFA, to display unnecessary egos.
Finally, guys, lets not forget that NFA is only a tiny fragment of the entire Nigerian public system. What have you got to say? Just hang out here in Europe and continue to write this like this, not seen or hard by the people concern? Lets go and take some risks through practical contributions, and put our partriotism to test or forget it.

  8. That is the problem Nigerian football is facing, using unpatriotic players for us everytime. There are so many home based players that can make us proud but because those he goats are playing abroad, they believe they are the best.IK,you are exceptional, everyone knows you are patriotic.
Follow the steps of Benin, sack everybody, even the NFF.Nigerian football is now rubbish.

  9. LOOK AT NFF CHAIRMAN PAST AND PRESENT ; PEOPLE WHO SCORED HIGHEST IN CORRUPTION, LOWEST IN MANAGEMENT AND ZOMBIE IN GAME OF FOOTBALL.

1.Alhaji Ibrahim Galadima - how many national team players bear such names ''alhaji''.

    2. Sani Lulu Abdulahi -- Typical drop out .

THESE TWO PAST AND PRESENT FOOLS REPRESENT FAILURE. THEY BREATHE IN ''CORRUPTION'' and exhale ''MISMANAGEMENT.

  12. I believe Nigerian problem is not a coach but meddling from the NFA and Co. I dont even think the coach or manager of the national team really have full control even westerhof had lots of meddling from the NFA AND Co.
I dont see the need to bring in an Egyptian coach when we have indigenous qualified coach or managers.

  14. this is just a crazy idea i must say,can you imagine an Egyptian coach.Don't get me wrong he could be a good coach am not disputing it,but the problem is that we have a good number of indigenous good coaches as well who are doing good work in most of the European countries, who i believe have European standard coaching qualifications. The main problem we still have in that country is bribery,we have refused to grow up,the question is, who will clean the system?Appointing an indigeneous coach may not help too because he will also be influenced by those croocks there. My dear good fellow Nigerians i bet you there is nothing we can to about it we can only shout but the voice is heard and that means that foot ball in Nigerian will remain as it is and that is it.

  15. I think the proplem with nigeria football is that the coaches are not prepare to take risk with untested player like the home base or those playing for a lower league in abroad or they lack adequate imformation about the player they are inviting at this presensent age of technology, eg (Kanu, Yakubu,Obafemi) and lots of other in that squad has not played for their club for more than twice this season or in some case none at all lack( Shittu) for Bolton and This are the people that form the nucleus of the nigeria national team. whereas they are lots of energetic home base who want to play and give their best. they should learn from Ghana.

  16. We need home Grown Coaches and Home base talented players, Who are highly dedicated, Motivated, in bringing Victory. We need good preparation, we need to go back to the late 80's and think what did we do differently, By then I was a player myself but now a coach in europe, Nigeria can perform considarably well in South Africa.

NFF is highly Corrupt institution that need reform, I believe in the good will of ordinary Nigerias.

The institution fail the people of Nigeria, forget Big Name players, a tree does not make a forest, all we need is a player who are highly motivated, at the end of day, it's the result that matters not the big name.

Mark My word, We have experience coaches in Europe who are Nigeria, Highly Qualifier for the Job, with UEFA Qualification,They don't like to give kickback money or promise
any official help for their players, For this reason No one want to Know about them. when they pass their application forward, the application will not get to the top.

They say is who you know, then why do we expect good result. Sad,sad, sad story Brothers.
Guys Don't give up,keep fighting for good course.

  20. Hello,

With due respect, the Egyptian coach is very good but the Cameroonian one is better. Shehata is good for the African Cup Nations and not for the world cup. Maybe the NFA needs him but not Cameroon. Cameroon is happy with Paul Le Guen. He is a more experience coach than Shehata. He is one of the best now in African. Watch out for Cameroon in South Africa. I know they are going to make Africa proud. This is always the problem with us West Africans. Nigeria has a good coach because they did not win the nation’s cup. They have to go for Shehata because he won the nation’s cup. Good michael
