Bristol City boss Gary Johnson described Jamie McCombe's winner in Saturday's 2-1 Championship home victory over Hull as "a sublime moment".McCombe's spectacular bicycle kick came less than a minute into the second half after Hull had looked the better side for much of the opening 45 minutes at Ashton Gate.
The visitors failed to clear Lee Johnson's free-kick into the box, and McCombe buried the bouncing ball after hurling himself backwards.
"I can't recall ever seeing a goal like that from a centre-back before," admitted manager Johnson, whose side are now two points clear at the top of the table with 11 games remaining.
"In fairness, Jamie did well in shooting practice this week. I can only call it a sublime moment, which no-one will forget for a long time.
"It's great to be in pole position with only 11 games left. We have believed in ourselves from day one, and nothing has changed.
"We have a tough week ahead, with trips to Charlton and Leicester City. This was a must-win game for that reason, and now we can approach the next two matches with confidence."
Dele Adebola volleyed City ahead in the 14th minute after Neil Clement had dithered under a high ball.
But Hull equalised on the stroke of half-time as Ian Ashbee's cut-back appeared to go in off defender Liam Fontaine.
Hull boss Phil Brown was left frustrated, as well as disappointed.
"I thought we could easily have come away with three points, let alone one," he said. "But we didn't have that bit of luck where it mattered.
"All credit to Bristol City - they are top on merit, work very hard for one another and have a belief in themselves.
"The atmosphere was fantastic, and the game was a cracking spectacle, despite difficult, windy conditions.
"We played well, but lacked that bit of quality in the final third, which is so important."
Hull should have taken a first-minute lead when Caleb Folan sliced badly wide when presented with an open goal by Henrik Pedersen's cross.
Folan was twice denied by McCombe blocks, and, in the closing moments, Fraizer Campbell fired against a post from Folan's pass.
For City, Adebola had a 59th-minute shot blocked by Sam Ricketts when a goal seemed certain, and substitute David Noble fired over from a good position.
But Johnson's men were hanging on at the death, and their fans celebrated with relief at the final whistle.
