Jones: Bluebirds sung out of key

Sun 02 Mar, 12:45 PM

Cardiff boss Dave Jones admits he is already looking forward to putting Saturday's 1-0 Championship home defeat by Leicester behind him.An own goal by skipper Darren Purse in the 26th minute handed the relegation-threatened Foxes a vital victory at Ninian Park.

A clearance from keeper Paul Henderson was booted into his own net by Purse just as Peter Enckelman was about to gather.

Jones did not attempt to make any excuses about the solitary goal or the defeat which means the Bluebirds have now taken just one point from the last 15.

He said: "It was a poor goal to give away and Darren made the wrong decision.

"It was a very poor game and the goal summed up our day as it even got worse after that.

"The wind had nothing to do with the goal, it was just a defensive mistake.

"You get games like this sometimes but must keep trying to work your way out of it. That is what I told the players at half time but it just didn't happen for them.

"We will be back in tomorrow, dust ourselves down and start all over again".

Leicester could have gone ahead in the fourth minute when Enckelman made a hash of a goal kick.

The ball ran along the ground straight to the waiting Leicester striker DJ Campbell who gathered and made for goal. Luckily for the home side Enckelman recovered to grab the ball at the second attempt.

The home keeper was the busiest player on the field as he gathered goal attempts from Campbell, Steve Howard and Ian Hume.

In contrast, Cardiff rarely strung two passes together and the Leicester defence coped quite easily with the rare Cardiff attacks.

Once the visitors were ahead they never looked like losing the match and the only surprise was that they failed to increase their lead despite enjoying most of the possession.

Leicester manager Ian Holloway was delighted with the result.

"I have not seen such a competent performance from my side since I have been at the club.

"I asked my players before the game to be brave, stand up and be counted and I doubt whether you will find a better away performance than that.

"We have restricted a very good passing side to few goal attempts and fully deserved our victory. It was a whole team effort and the players fully deserve their success.

"We now need another victory straight away to get this club moving forward".
