Slomka optimistic despite defeat

Wed 02 Apr, 08:00 AM

Coach Mirko Slomka insists Schalke can still make it through to the Champions League semi-finals despite their 1-0 home defeat to Barcelona.A goal from Bojan Krkic in the 12th minute was the only difference between the two sides in Gelsenkirchen, earning the Catalan giants a crucial advantage in their last-eight first-leg clash.

But an encouraging second-half performance from the home side means Slomka is refusing to accept the tie is already over.

"If you see the second half then you have got to think that we have chances," he said.

"We cannot commit the error of thinking we can do that for the full 90 minutes there - but if we can keep the game all square at 0-0 for a long time, then we have a chance.

"A goal can change a lot."

Frank Rijkaard's Barcelona struggled to retain possession in the second half, and the Dutchman admitted: "We could have prevented them from getting back into the game and controlled it better.

"I would have liked us to maintain the pressure in the second half, but these are only minor details.

"This is definitely a good result - and the team has worked hard for it, so congratulations to them."
