The 23-year-old Swede joined from French club Strasbourg in 2006 but has spent most of the time on the sidelines.

And he has now told Swedish television that he wants to be released from his Bundesliga contract, which runs until 2010.

"I already told them I wanted out during the last winter break but they told me no," the former Under-21 international told fotbollskanalen.se.

"It's hard. I haven't played in the last five matches. All I want is some playing time.

"But I guess all I can do is keep going and hope for the best.

"It doesn't look like they want me to play and yet they won't let me go."

Farnerud, the younger brother of Sporting Lisbon's Pontus, previously played for Landskrona before moving to France in 2003.
