Mowbs keen to get hands on trophy

Fri 02 May, 04:30 PM

West Brom boss Tony Mowbray says he'll do everything in his power to win the Championship title - but has no designs on ever lifting it again.Leaders Albion will head to QPR on Sunday safe in the knowledge it will take an extraordinary sequence of results to deny them their place in the Premier League.

They are level on points with Stoke and three points clear of third-placed Hull with a vastly-superior goal difference over both sides.

The sums are simple for Mowbray's men. Win at Loftus Road and the championship is theirs, which would make it third time lucky after finishing second in 2002 and 2004.

It is 88 years since their one and only top-flight championship success in the old First Division.

The likes of Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal are unlikely to feel threatened by their impending arrival - but the Baggies boss is adamant which division he would rather be competing in.

Mowbray said: "On a personal note, I would like to think we are not going to win many championships because we will be spending more time in the top division and then the goals become different of course.

"A lot of fans have told me how important they see the fact that, if we can win a championship, we should do, so we will be doing just that.

"But once that hopefully has been achieved we will put that behind us very quickly as something we don't want to do very often because we envisage staying in the top division for a lot of years and not having to worry about having to win Championship titles."

Mowbray believes winners' medals would be an apt reward for his players' efforts this season but knows they cannot take the unpredictable Hoops lightly.

"It's always nice to reflect in years to come and talk not just about a promotion-winning season but a championship-winning season," he added.

"I think it would be nice for the players to have something to show in years to come for their achievements so we will be going to try and win but it's always a difficult place to go."

The former Hibernian manager concedes his squad will need strengthening for next season and challenged his players to prove they will still be worth their place.

"The team needs adding to and needs strength in depth," he said. "I am not envisaging taking an axe to the squad but I am not naive enough to realise it doesn't need help.

"It's about getting the balance of your team right and trying to recruit players for the Premier League that will help the existing players.

"We will be trying to recruit players that do just that, help the squad to try and achieve next year.

"If that means bringing in extra quality that displaces somebody then it's down to the players in the team right now to make sure they are not the ones who get displaced. We are adding competition to the squad."
