Sol: Defence is a team effort

Fri 02 May, 10:00 AM

Sol Campbell is eager to share the credit for Portsmouth's defending this season with his Fratton Park team-mates.Pompey's best campaign in living memory, which has seen them pushing for a top-five Premier League finish as well as reaching the FA Cup final, has been built on the consistency of Campbell and centre-back partner Sylvain Distin.

But ahead of Saturday's trip to Middlesbrough, Campbell insisted the likes of Hermann Hreidarsson, Glen Johnson, Noe Pamarot, Lauren and goalkeeper David James have made just as big a contribution.

"It's not just me and Sylvain," Campbell said on the club's official website.

"Hermann's come in and been fantastic this season and Glen's been great as well.

"Noe and Lauren have also done well whenever they've been called upon.

"Then you've got Jamo in goal, who's playing some of the best football of his career. He's done his fair share and won games for us.

"I'm sure Linvoy (Primus) will be looking to get back to where he was and fighting for a place in the side as well.

"But we're also defending well from the front.

"When we're attacking, it takes pressure off the defence.

"If you're having to get a tackle or a block in every two or three minutes then eventually something's going to come off for the opposition. But that's not happening here."

Campbell believes, ultimately, manager Harry Redknapp must take the majority of the plaudits for his players' performances.

"Harry knows his players," the England defender explained.

"He gives them time and space to get on with their job and doesn't put too many restrictions on them.

"He treats the players like men and understands we aren't all robots and that sometimes we have other things happening in our lives.

"That's why over a number of years he's been able to get the best out of a lot of players. Not everyone's got that ability."

The former Arsenal star added: "Even though he's a completely different manager to (Gunners boss) Arsene Wenger, they both like to see football played the way it should be played and they've both got a winning mentality."

Campbell is keen for Portsmouth to warm up for the cup final meeting with Cardiff in style.

He said: "We've got two difficult matches to play before the FA Cup final and we want to pick up points in both of them.

"Middlesbrough on Saturday will be difficult because they're not safe yet so we know we will have to be at our best.

"The same goes for Fulham on the final day of the season."
