Premier League - Fantasy: Choose 'em or lose 'em

Eurosport - Sat, 02 May 12:11:00 2009

Liverpool are at home to Newcastle this weekend so it is time to put all your eggs in one basket and load up on as many Reds as possible.

GOALKEEPERS

Choose 'em: One goal in their last four Premier League outings says Newcastle cannot score for toffee and the likelihood of them adding to that paltry tally at Liverpool is slight, to say the least. So get Jose Reina on board for 11.28 - even though he's on the expensive side, the Spaniard is as good as a dead cert for a clean sheet. If not, look no further than the slightly cheaper Brad Friedel (8.98) or even Manchester City's Shay Given (7.50, home to Blackburn). Rovers' own Paul Robinson (4.79) remains a tempting gamble if you think, like us, he can hold City, whose half decent-run must surely come to an end sooner rather than later.

Lose 'em: Fulham's Mark Schwarzer has been one of the keepers of the season, but with a West London derby at Chelsea on the horizon, it's time to cash in the 13.94 you spent on him. Meanwhile, another 17.5-point haul from David James (9.61) is unlikely with Portsmouth facing free-scoring Arsenal this week, so you're probably best off without the England shot-stopper.

DEFENDERS:

Choose 'em: Liverpool defenders. Any of them. Jamie Carragher (8.77), Martin Skrtel (9.27) and Alvaro Arebloa (9.87) are the best bets as all three are likely to play at Anfield against Newcastle. Aston Villa are at home to Hull City on Monday, so Nicky Shorey (5.13) and Curtis Davies (7.18) also look good value for money. And in a similar vein, Middlesbrough have only found the back of the net 25 times this season, so any Manchester United defender is a safe bet - John O'Shea (6.66) looks like the best value.

Lose 'em: Rio Ferdinand (8.98) may not have broken his ribs, but there is zero chance of him playing at the Riverside - can the England defender, along with fellow crock Phil Jagielka (9.85) of Everton. And if there were any of you who were crazy enough to have Jose Enrique (7.61) in your side in the first place, get rid of him now - the Spaniard is out injured.

MIDFIELDERS:

Choose 'em: Points machine Steven Gerrard (17.14) returns from injury for Liverpool and is certain to pick up yet more against Newcastle. The Reds skipper is this week's must-have accessory for any self-respecting Fantasy manager. Youngster Kieran Gibbs will play for Arsenal at the back, but he is down as a midfielder in the game, so why not snap him up for the bargain price of 5.74? And on the subject of bargain Kierans, Kieron (albeit with an o) Dyer could start for a second successive game against Stoke and is cheap as chips at 5.69 if you need a filler.

Lose 'em: Gerrard's return will probably signal the end of Lucas Leiva's run in the Liverpool side, so it is time to offload the Brazilian. Likewise Chelsea's Deco, who is set to miss the game against Fulham with a hamstring injury and Michael Carrick of Manchester United, who could be rested with one eye on the Champions League clash with Arsenal next week.

FORWARDS:

Choose 'em: Federico Macheda could get the nod to start for Manchester United, and with the champions playing struggling Middlesbrough, the Italian could be worth a punt at 7.50. James Beattie (11.98) is set to return from injury at home to West Ham and, alongside Ricardo Fuller (4.95), the bruising Stoke striker is more than capable of bagging a few points. Wigan's Amr Zaki (11.63, home to Bolton) is also worth a punt, if a cheap option is needed. But it is probably too late for those without Arsenal's Andrei Arshavin, whose stock has risen so meteorically he is now worth a stonking 24.71. For those that missed out - tough luck.

Lose 'em: Tottenham's Darren Bent (11.20) is likely to miss the rest of the season with a knee injury, so cut him from your team now. Elsewhere, there is a slight chance Guus Hiddink could rest a few players ahead of Chelsea's Champions League second leg against Barcelona, so perhaps it too risky to keep Didier Drogba (9.65) in your side.
