The awarding of the PFA Player of the Year gong to Manchester United's Ryan Giggs has divided opinion amongst eurosport.yahoo.com readers.
Giggs was handed the prestigious individual award last week, despite having made just a dozen league starts this season.
He beat four of his United team-mates - Rio Ferdinand, Edwin van der Sar, Cristiano Ronaldo, Nemanja Vidic - and Liverpool's Steven Gerrard to the award, which is voted for by fellow professionals.
Giggs has enjoyed a glorious career with United winning, amongst other titles, 10 Premier League and two Champions League trophies.
The 35-year-old veteran has also won numerous individual awards, including the PFA Young Player of the Year at the beginning of his career back in 1992 and 1993.
But the senior honour had always eluded him, leading some to suggest this year's vote was purely a sentimental one.
The slight majority of readers agreed - out of 28,097 votes cast in our poll since Monday, April 27, 54 per cent believed Giggs to be the wrong choice.
The midfielder does have his supporters though, and 46 per cent of you claimed he was a deserving recipient of the award.
Was Ryan Giggs the right choice for PFA Player of the Year?
Yes 46 per cent - 13000 votes
No 54 per cent - 15097 votes

johnka7a: "Giggs?! All the other nominees deserve the award more than Giggs! Everyone is underrating Ronaldo and no one is acknowledging Gerrard because of his recent injuries! It should be one of them! Giggs deserves this award the least from that group!!!"
Lucy: "This is fixed, there is NO WAY that Giggs should have won this award over Gerrard. Giggs played coming off the bench most of this season."
mike onyibe: "I agree with Arsene Wenger when he comments that the call for PFA award comes too early in the season to pick players with an all-round season average. Otherwise How else can you objectively justify Ryan Giggs? He's a great player no doubt but this season? Methinks not!"
Varnavas P: "Giggs is real legend but lets be realistic. They just gave it to him because of respect and not because of his performances. Gerrard or Vidic deserved it way more."
Chris: "Giving the award to Giggs just seems to be a 'well done, now please retire' move. He hasn't earned it, not this season anyway. It's not supposed to be a lifetime achievement award. Twelve games and one goal?! There are probably numerous players playing for the likes of Bolton, Fulham, Sunderland, Middlesbrough or West Brom (or any other Prem club come to that) who have stats better than 12 games one goal but they have won no award. This is nostalgia of the highest order. Give the award to someone who has played well this season, don't give it to Giggs just for the sake of it, what a load of rubbish."
Ihuoma: "Despite making only 12 Premier League starts and scoring a single goal, Giggs is a great player and very loyal but still doesn't deserve the award for the best individual player in the league. I think Vidic deserves it more than Giggs and Ronaldo."
markear1: "Giggs has been a great pro, one of the best. For that only, maybe he deserved it. But realistically a player who only made 24 appearances, 12 starts and 9 full games does not really deserve it. I would have given it to Gerrard or Vidic."
a.barnes199: "The most decorated player ever, he deserves this award just for that!"
Troika: "I'm an Aston Villa fan, but I've got to say "GIGGSY" you are top of the pile, all young footballers should look up to you as a wonderful example. You have qualities that many of the more glamorous players just don't have... for example "Loyalty" and "Professionalism". I'm proud of you....do the football world a big favour, and carry on until you are 40!"
jimmyrice: "This was voted by the players, you cannot argue that the players know about football."

If not RYAN GIGGS then who should get? Michale Ballack? Michael Owen? Drogba? Gerrard?
none of these players desrve the accolade.. they have not been that long in the game
maintaining the same form and cconsistency... lets face it.. ryan has done all this..

I think Giggs should not have got this award. It is not good enough for him.
get your heads cleared lads!! they just told him thank you 4 your loyalty. Thats a great way to say goodbye, see you around the block. Giggs may become one of those assistant soon. Drink to his name, i'm buying, meet me at the pub. CHEERS!!!!
total fix giggs should not of got it a farce total farce
PFA WAS NOT FOR GIGGS IT WAS FOR S GERRARD HE IS NUMBER 1
PFA WAS NOT FOR GIGGS IT WAS FOR S GERRARD HE IS NUMBER 1
According to all the brain-dead Man U haters and in particular all the Liverpool players( past and present) and including the so called TV pundits, United should have bottled it before now and should have run out of steam or run out of legs. What on earth is United doing by winning their games and now equalling the scousers on goal difference. Further, the result and particularly the performance against Arsenal must have been a real sickener for the scousers to swallow. Here come United again!
Some people here, like steviecalrow, are absolutely BRAINLESS. The press didn't vote, Manchester United fans didn't vote. Manchester United players are not allowed to vote for players from their own team. Giggs could not vote for himself. It was his fellow professionals from teams like Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea, etc. who voted for him.
Lucy, it wasn't fixed. There may have been a sentimental element to this vote but that is not against the rules. Nobody stood out as having a particularly good season. There are liverpool fans here who would have Steven Gerrard win the eurovision and Miss World competitions if they could.
Eurosport.yahoo should have more sense than to even put this poll forward. It's something you would expect from The Sun or The Daily Star.
Giggs proved against boro why he earned the pfa award.. he's class
If this decision was made by any other group other than his fellow Professionals then I would agree, That it was the wrong decision to elect Giggs as the winner. But these players are in unison when they made their majority decision
So who were 2nd and 3rd anyway?
giggs deserves a penis in his arse
VOTED FOR BY THE PLAYERS... WHO KNOW FOOTBALL A DAMNSIGHT BETTER THAN US.. besides Giggs has had a great season lets not forget (Fantastic at the age of 35)
No one has stood out, like in previous seasons, they all had a good shout.. But the proffesionals have voted for Giggs
Cant believe such a big thing has been made of it...
Gerrard probably voted for himself....lol
All the players from league voted. And GIGGS is the player of this season...don't be jealous:)
Its fellow players who decide on the award, get over it. He won.
Wait until next year to whine and complain.
Whatever you say won't change the fact he was VOTED by fellow PLAYERS already.
His service to the game is outstanding!!
Giggs just scored another one for Man U against Midd. Deserves it in my opinion for his service to the game.
Cheers, Rick
