Kenny Dalglish accepts that someone is going to have to do Liverpool a favour now for them to win the Barclays Premier League crown.
Newcastle, also at one time managed by Dalglish, will be trying to end Liverpool's dreams as well as boosting their own hopes of avoiding relegation when the club's meet in a vital match at Anfield on Sunday.
By then United could be six points clear of second-placed Liverpool if they can beat Middlesbrough at lunchtime today in another match that has great importance to the top and bottom of the division.
And Dalglish echoed the feelings of every Liverpool fan by saying: "All of a sudden you become a fan of whoever Manchester United are playing."
"Unfortunately we're dependant on someone doing us a favour," said Dalglish, who was in charge when the Reds last won the league in 1990.
"If United rest a few players, as Fergie has suggested, ahead of their Champions League semi-final second leg next week against Arsenal, that gives Middlesbrough a wee bit more encouragement. If Middlesbrough get a good result then it's going to beneficial to Liverpool, but only if they win against Newcastle."

Liverpool gave it to manchester this year all on our own. too many draws with weak teams with which manch. won almost all, the positive thing this season Liverpool did great with big teams (beating them twice was fantastic) if we can repeat that next year and keep Torres fit all season there is no doubt in my mind LIVERPOOL will be next champion RED FOREVER FROM ALBANIA
Well to be honest I am just happy that the Liverpool players have finally realised they can compete with the top sides now, be interesting to see who Benitez brings in to strengthen for next season, if Gerrard and Torres can keep fit and we have the same commitment as this season then good things are bound to happen soon enough, thanks for a great season LFC, still all the belief in the world and congratulations to the eventual champions
rafa didnt blow it it was the players.. i remember robbie keane missing some sitters early in the season which cost us points
Dalglish for mgr
We lost it on our own. the league was in our hands but we are just not clinical enough. now wer up for it but too late. Manu may slip but not twice.
We should of played the stars more often than the back up boys in the less challenging matches that we drew!

Kenny, what is needed is for Liverpool to drop points so that all the silly headlines stop. ie. Reds need help, Liverpool need a miracle etc. If the team is not able to win on their own then so be it.Other teams are allowed to win the premiership including Man U. If Liverpool win the premiership now or in the future it will have to be on their own merit.
According to all the brain-dead Man U haters and in particular all the Liverpool players( past and present) and including the so called TV pundits, United should have bottled it before now and should have run out of steam or run out of legs. What on earth is United doing by winning their games and now equalling the scousers on goal difference. Further, the result and particularly the performance against Arsenal must have been a real sickener for the scousers to swallow. Here come United again!
Man Utd are 6 points clear with 4 matches left... I'm a Realistic Scouser, it's almost impossible this season...
As I've been saying for the last 19 years, NEXT YEAR... pfff ! Hope Rafa's happy that we drew against Fulham, Stoke, West Ham, etc...
liverpool will win the league id rather them than united anyone but united can win it i prefer liverpool though
or even Dalglish ;-)
