The 55 year old Daum joined Cologne in 2006 and won promotion to the Bundesliga with them in 2008, successfully keeping them in the division this past season.

"We are sad that Christoph Daum is leaving," Cologne chairman Wolfgang Overath said in a statement. "Christoph thanked us for the collaboration and said he could not refuse the offer. We wish him all the best in his new job."

Daum takes over from Luis Aragones who was sacked after leading the club to a disappointing fourth placed finish, though the club did qualify for the Europa League.

"My decision is not going against Cologne but in favour of new challenges," Daum said in a statement released through his lawyers.

"I have the chance to play internationally right away which for me as a coach is a major challenge."

Daum won back to back championships with the Turkish giants in 2004 and 2005 and also had two spells in charge at Besiktas.
