Carlo Ancelotti set his sights on winning Chelsea's first Champions League crown after becoming the club's fifth manager in under two years.

Ancelotti, 49, who announced his departure as coach of Milan on Sunday, has signed a three-year-contract and will start on July 1.

The former Italy international the Champions League twice as a player and twice as a manager with Milan, and said his aim was to bring the European Cup to Stamford Bridge.

"For me, the Champions League is a beautiful sensation because when I played I won two times in 1989 and 1990 and it was a fantastic achievement," he said.

"And it was the same as a coach in 2003 and 2007. Champions League, for me, is the best competition in the world and all teams want to win it.

"Five semi-finals in six years is a beautiful score (for Chelsea) but now we need to win."

Earlier, Chelsea confirmed Ancelotti's appointment two days after interim manager Guus Hiddink won the FA Cup in his final game.

"Carlo was the outstanding candidate for the job. He has proved over a long period his ability to build teams that challenged for, and have been successful in, major domestic and European competitions," a club statement read.

"We are sure everybody at Chelsea will give him a warm welcome and we are all looking forward to working with him."

Ancelotti had great success as a player and coach with Milan, winning two Champions Leagues and a Serie A title during his eight years in charge at the San Siro.

Hiddink had taken the role of temporary Chelsea coach after the dismissal of Brazilian Luiz Felipe Scolari in February.

Hiddink, Russia's national team coach, completed his three-month stint at Stamford Bridge by winning the FA Cup on Saturday with a 2-1 victory over Everton.

"They've (Chelsea) had too many changes and they recognise that themselves," Hiddink said after the Wembley win. "Stability is needed now."

They had that under Jose Mourinho but after his surprise departure in September 2007, the stability and the trophies dried up.

Avram Grant took them to within a missed John Terry penalty of Champions League glory and also to a Premier League runners-up spot but left soon after.

Russian billionaire owner Roman Abramovich's desperate need for another big name appointment led to Scolari but the Brazilian World Cup winner left after Chelsea's assault on the Premier League title was seemingly fizzling out.

Dutchman Hiddink revived Chelsea and they finished third in the Premier League, reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League before their FA Cup success.

  4. koppite, its easier to win the CL than the league. the CL you can get away with being lucky as your team proved. the league you need to retain a certai standard all season. chelsea uped the standard of the EPL to where it is today in a matter of 2 seasons. 5 CL semi finals in 6 years shows ability in europe anyway and cheated out of 2 winning campaigns and the unluckiest team in the world in 1 final.

and why do all of you liverpool fans go on about money? you moan that its a terrible way to win yet you all cry saying you want foreign owners and hundreds of millions to spend on world class players. you are so arrogant its hard to believe

  5. we need a good young creative mid, Moussa Dembele who we have been linked with looks good, left footed, can dribble, young and from what Ive seen his finishing is ok. gourcouff also looks an option, not sure of age but he's a silky guy and comparisons with zidane are founded from what Ive seen. scored an incredible goal this season against psg I think.

  14. Koppite - If you want to go back further we could go back to Liverpools most successfull period in history and see how much more they spent on the best players of the time bouyed by the owner of Littlewoods football pools money !

As for not winning the CL we saw this year just how totally corrupt the whole competition is. It's no coincidence that no G14 club ever won the competition before it was disbanded. I personally couldn't give a flying f%*K about thwe CL, It's got no integrity anymore and is simply a cash cow manipulated by the likes of Platini !

  15. Pete you are right. 20 years without a title isnt good. But then when was the last time Chelsea won the title? or the european cup? Hmm, still scratching your head? You seem to use June 2006 as a start date...but you know as well as everyone else, if you start earlier than that, in 2003 for example, Chelsea have definitely outspent Liverpool and in that Liverpool won the european cup. What did Chelsea do? Exactly.
Your stats are only worth so much credence...NOT much.

From bigben, on Tue 2 Jun 9:38AM
  17. Nick P - A little lesson on how much money Chelsea have spent caompared to Liverpool in the last 3 seasons. From 1st June 2006 Liverpool have spent £115.5m and Chelsea £109m. In that time Liverpool have won 1 FA Cup and Chelsea 2 FA Cups and a League Cup. And that's with Chelsea going through 3 different managers in that time and still finishing above Liverpool in the EPL all but this year. I wouldn't go on about how much chelsea have spent and how Liverpool are superior untill I knew the facts myself. 20 years without a League title for such a great team? Something doesn't quite add up does it?
