Premier League - Sunderland set to confirm Bruce

Eurosport - Tue, 02 Jun 09:51:00 2009

Sunderland are expected to confirm Steve Bruce as their new manager on Tuesday afternoon after agreeing a compensation package for the Wigan boss.

2008-2009 Wigan Athletic Steve Bruce - 0

Bruce is set to replace Ricky Sbragia, who resigned on the final day of the season after narrowly keeping the club in the Premier League.

Wigan chairman Dave Whelan, who paid Birmingham three million pounds to release Bruce from his St Andrews contract in November 2007, has insisted Sunderland had to come up with a similiar remuneration.

That financial package has now been agreed and Sunderland officials are believed to be in Portugal - where Bruce is on holiday - to thrash out personal details after being given permission to speak to the former Manchester United defender.

Bruce has often been linked with the manager's job at Newcastle but a return to his native north-east with Sunderland would be equally welcome.

But the main attraction must be American businessman Ellis Short's recent takeover at the Stadium of Light.

Short is certain to give Bruce a substantial transfer warchest, which would differ vastly from his tenure at Wigan, where he has been forced to sell his best players and look for bargain buys.

Wilson Palacios was sold to Tottenham and Emile Heskey left for Aston Villa during the January transfer window, ruining Wigan's chances of a Europa League place.

With winger Antonio Valencia attracting attention from Manchester United and several other top clubs, Bruce would have almost certainly lost another star player before next season.

There has also been speculation Bruce has to slash the Wigan wage bill, which could have led to more players being shown the exit.

At Sunderland he will get the chance to build by buying in proven quality rather than having to rely on a scouting system which regularly took him to South America to recruit untested players.

  1. ha ha cameron come on thought you had broader shoulders and thicker skin than that.I was merely making a valid comment that I don't think the reality has set in yet i.e the pill has not been swallowed, this is indicated by your bizarre statement that NUFC will be on tv more than us,truely bizarre. You might get some highlights on a weekend on 'The Championship' but sky will not touch you with a barge pole, hence the need for a parachute payment.Loss in revenue is estimated at £50 mill for NUFC next season

  2. elephanstone grammer check derby games is small 'd' only a capital when it's Derby town,ha ha I to can split hairs.Think you're wrong,we'll improve next season,NUFC may have to consolidate and come up the following season.Stokoe played nearly 3oo games for the Mags, guess what,we don't give a flying@#$%,we don't care about Bruce's misguided youth either.

  3. nellie the elephant so ur looking forward to championship derbys next in 2010 so u don't think u'll gain promotion next season and as for ur 52000 crowds we shall see next season just how loyal ur fans are i expect u'll average around 40,000 no where near the 52000 u expect. All u newcastle fans have to throw at us is "u will not survive next season" when we got so much ammo to throw at u a badly run club with massive wage bill no leadership for sale to the lowest bidder heading for very tough times and worrying that they might do a leeds

  4. jack torrance.. quote:premiership one is I'm afraid saddley ignorant of the situation you will find yourselves in next sea... It is simply: Sadly... Spell Check!
Secondly, I admire your faith in SAFC as they attempt to survive in the Premiership alone.. They will not survive, not with the BIG Managerial signing of Steve 'NUFC Fan' Bruce.. Look at his record Mate (Marra!).. Huddersfield, Sheffield, Wigan (twice), Crystal Palace, and a whole host of 'Cash Lucrative' positions.. none ever fully committed.. either through failure, links with other clubs, OR more salient ..MONEY! He is a big, fat, flat-nosed Money-Grabbing Un-Successful Football Manager... I look forward to our Championship Tyne-Wear Derbys!.. Where we will still manage to get 52,000 (Skunks) Arses on seats.. 51,999, If I have to work away!!

The banter has been a laugh. I am sure you will continue to remind us about how bad we can sometimes play when we lose a match next season.

  10. cameron don't think this was worst squad u've had ability wise just think that lack of leadership contributed to them not playing to their potentials and i include shearer in that he got 100k a game and took 5 games to work out that 4 4 2 was ur best formation when all year long on motd he kept saying newcastle must play 4 4 2

  11. jack how can it possibly be 'normal service'; you've been relegated from the EPL THREE TIMES man!
And your comment about me and a 'bitter pill'; very, very harsh jack as i think, on reflection, you know yourself!

From cameron w, on Tue 2 Jun 8:20PM
  12. Cameron this is "normal service" now.The harsh reality of the situation has not sank in yet,not fully. No more top players,no more capacity crowds, vastly reduced tv appearances and therefore cash.To think a championship team will get more coverage than a premiership one is I'm afraid saddley ignorant of the situation you will find yourselves in next season.Unless sky sees the novelty value of you playing us in the FA cup or setanta is pushed for a game on a monday night, you will have to go to SJP to see your team, they will be treat like second hand goods by sky I'm afraid.I know this hurts,I've been there, but Newcastle V Preston Northend is only of any interest to people who live in those 2 areas.Whereas when we play Man Utd 1/2 the world that has electricity will be watching,it's really as simple as that. You and Tony have a pretty bitter pill to swallow,I think it's still stuck in your throats at the moment.

I ONLY HOPE THAT THE RIGHT MAN WILL BE IN PLACE TO TAKE US TO A
    HIGHER PLACE IN THE PREM.

  14. Tony, let them have their moment; after all, they have waited an entire generation for it.
Within 5 years, normal service will be resumed.
They seem to forget, because they've been more interested in the goings on at SJP, that they have an apalling squad of players. Regardless of how bad NUFC was, and it was truly shocking, it says little for an safc squad that survived on a derisory 36 points, a mere 2 points ahead of arguably the worst NUFC squad in history!
safc hold the 2nd worst ever points total in the EPL, been relegated 3 times - honestly, you ain't got nothing to be proud of. Bruce, the Geordie, has a monumental task on his hands.
As for that plug who said it was safc's 4 points that got us relegated; what a silly thing to say!
Personally, i thought it was the 6 points liverpool took off us, or the 6 points that chelsea took off us, or the 6 points that arsenal took off us, or the 6 points that . . . . . . . .plug!
Oh and btw, just keep an eye out for which club gets more live games on Sky next season; even as a Championship club we'll have more pull than you lot, and more fans!

  16. TonyK, as opposed to all the Newcastle fans who were throwing their season tickets in the Tyne river early on in the season, now thats loyalty isn't it? You won't come straight back to the Premier League, you will be down there for a long time with the smoggies. So you best learn to live with that. Your a Championship side now, Sunderland are Premier League. So whatever comments you have to say, when all is said and done, remember that Newcastle United are in the Championship, and Sunderland are in the Premier League. Oh what a great warm feeling that brings inside.

  17. mac, you've been misinformed. Cricket ain't just for toffs. The proletariat can enjoy it too. Being blinkered and closed minded really isn't a trait to be proud of.

From PATRICK, on Tue 2 Jun 3:55PM
  18. Tony K... Sunderland did play like garbage, but it wasn't a slice of luck that kept them up. It was the ineptitude of clubs like Newcastle.

From Deke, on Tue 2 Jun 3:16PM
  19. Tony K
I agree with you that Newcastle play cr@p footlball.

However, there is absolutely no way that I can't help LOVING the fact that points in a local derby are the sweetest. Points from Newcastle are even better. Points that cause Newcastle to go down and Sunderland to stay up are the best. We all REALLY LOVE that.

Apparently, Newcastle might be sold for 80 million which is a lot lower than the 200 million plus valuation he had before. That's the cost of Championship football. Nevertheless, it should make Newcastle a more attractive purchase. You should be thanking us for helping Ashley make his mind to sell.
