England defenders Rio Ferdinand and Ashley Cole missed Monday's training session as a precaution ahead of the trip to Kazakhstan for Saturday's World Cup qualifier.

Chelsea left-back Cole suffered a knock during the FA Cup final win over Everton on Saturday, while Ferdinand rested as a result of the calf problem he had before Manchester United's Champions League final defeat to Barcelona.

England coach Fabio Capello hopes both players will train in the next few days to prove their fitness in preparation for the match in Almaty, then the Wembley encounter with Andorra next week.

All the other members of Capello's squad trained at Arsenal's London Colney base, with James Milner joining the squad to replace United midfielder Michael Carrick.

David Beckham, Frank Lampard, John Terry and Joleon Lescott, who all played at the weekend, separated from the rest to the group to do running exercises on their own during Monday's session.

Capello is already without goalkeepers David James and Ben Foster, who were ruled out of the squad through injury.

  4. Rio should not be an automatic choice for the center back position anyway.
He showed just how bad he can be when leaving Messi in 5 yards of space to head Barca's 2nd goal in the Champs League Final.
Dont see any reason why Lescott, Woodgate or even Ledley King are not considered.
I would have a fit Ledley King in the back line in front of Rio any day, shame his knees have gone.
Ashley cole is a good LB, but i do think Bridge has better defensive qualities and his crossing is far superior.

  6. same OLD faces for England. Until such time a rule is brought in where ALL teams in the Premier league and possibly the championship league are to have a MINIMUM of 5 British players on the field at ALL times, the country will be a total waste of bloody time. Problem is in the UK that teams are paying funny money for anyone who can kick a ball better than anyone else suppoedly and it dont matter nation colour or even ability. This doesnt help the NATIONAL game one little bit

I believe there's a more better option at the back for Ferdinand. I don't see anything extra ordinary in him. Ashley Cole will be missed if he doesn't make he team as he's the best LB in England and one of the very best in Europe. Is there an adequate and more better reserve than him? Wayne Bridge most of the times flatters to deceive...
