Brentford boss Andy Scott will not rush top scorer Charlie MacDonald back from injury when the League One season kicks off.
MacDonald missed last term's run-in, when the Bees clinched the League Two title, with a dislocated shoulder and this week visited a specialist.
The 18-goal striker is on the mend but Scott will give him as long as necessary to be 100% fit for the new campaign.
"Charlie saw his surgeon and is progressing well, but it will be a long rehab," Scott told the Ealing Gazette.
"It's too early to put a date on his return yet. We don't want to rush him back and risk further damage."
