Coyle cool on Riordan link

Wed 02 Jul, 03:30 PM

Burnley manager Owen Coyle has distanced himself from reports linking him with a renewed bid for Celtic striker Derek Riordan.Coyle failed with a £400,000 bid for the former Hibernian forward, 25, in January and says he has not reignited his interest.

Coyle said: "I don't know where it has come from but it's certainly not from anyone at Burnley Football Club.

"It's well-documented I tried to sign him in January but there has been nothing since."

Riordan has made a total of 32 appearances since joining Celtic in 2006, scoring eight goals, and has won one Scotland cap.

  3. Although overjoyed with the final outcome of last season, I must say the return of Lennon saved wee Strachan's job. Since his return, we won all of the games he had a hand in the influanse of. Outwith Motherwell, (Which was the day he arrived back at the club) every game was the Celtic I know and love with the fighting spirit till the death. I surely did not see that against Aberdeen in the cup. Strachan kept saying we were the better team. We could not score and he would not change things up to light a candle under Scott and JVH's butt.
I kept the faith all the way through the season and I am a fan of Strachan's man management and how he recognizes the whole club for it's success. Maybe we all can see that he is human and makes big mistakes. One thing he is not and that's a "Mastermind"

  4. As a Celtic fan being honest i have never rated Riordan and when you have Jan and Scott up front we look very dangerous and we dont with Riordan.I think that Riordan would suit a team where he is one of the main focal points like he was at Hibernian.

  5. Well, maybe it's not only about ability but attitude and Riordan certainly hasn't shown the right one! He's continually went greeting to the press about not getting a game and there doesn't seem to be any support for him from the other players in the squad, so I tend to think he hasn't deserved his chance! Of course it's all about opinions, but I suppose the only one that counts is Strachans and for whatever reason he chose not to give him a regular game... but for someone who has masterminded our team to 3 league titles in a row, I'd say his decisions haven't been too far wrong!

  7. Mo, Burnley are not even in the premiership......what does your stadium hold about 15 thousand? our stadium is one of the best in europe, we have qualified for the last 16
of the champions league the last 2 years.....I dont know of any pub teams who play in europe year in year out. There is issues with Strachan & Riordan....But i dont know
    what they are.....

  8. Riordan is not wanted at Burnley if he cant cut it in the Scottish Pub League he certainly is not of sufficently high standard for the Super Clarets.

  9. Somewhat agreed, however, the only time Strachan threw him on was when we needed goals and we were under pressure for a draw or a winner. He did that in many games last season, St Mirren, Dundee Utd to name but 2. This shows that Strachan lived up to his orignal claim the Riordan was the most natural goal scorer at the club. Tell me that Evander Sno was pulling it out the hat every week at training and he was getting more and more chances unlike the Riordan.
Like I said, I reserve judgement on all of Gordon's decisions but this one, there is some underlying issues, but there is no way you can say he was given a fair crack at the whip when you see the things that other player in the club were let away with.
    Only my opinion

From Gerry O, on Wed 2 Jul 5:13PM
  10. Rubbish Gerry! Players only "get a chance" when they can show in training that they can deliver the goods and since we don't see what goes on in training the only logical assumption is he isn't doing it! We all saw what he can do when he played regularly with Hibs, but there's got to be something wrong with him and/or his attitude as to why he hasn't been getting a game for us... mind you, whenever he did play he didn't exactly set the heather alight with stunning 'undroppable' performances did he?

  11. The wee man is going to sign for another club in Sciotland and come back an haunt us. This is probably the worst management of a situation that Strachan has handled since joining the club. I reserve judgement on all of his decisions, however, he has not given this lad a chance.
