Barnsley boss Simon Davey will make Luke Steele his first-choice goalkeeper - for the first month of the season at least.
Rival Heinz Muller is ready to step up his recovery from knee surgery this week, but he will not be fit in time for the start of the season.
The Tykes begin their Championship campaign at QPR on August 9, and Davey told the Sheffield Star: "We think that August 9 might be a little bit too soon for Heinz.
"I'll be kicking the season off with a fantastic No 1 in Luke.
"He did very well for us last year, we've managed to secure him on a contract. He'll be starting the season unless there's a miraculous recovery from Heinz."
