Premier League - Transfer Talk: Viva España

Eurosport - Thu, 03 Jul 08:43:00 2008

Espanyol midfielder Albert Riera has revealed that he will soon be subject to a bid from an "important" club.

FOOTBALL. 2007-2008. La liga. Riera. Espanyol. - 0

Riera told the Spanish media: "In a few days my agent will arrive in Barcelona with an offer from an important club."

It will surprise precisely no one to find out that the aforementioned club is Liverpool, what with manager Rafael Benitez's policy of scouring the globe for the best available talent, then signing Spaniards.

Fresh off the back of the two Davids, Villa and Silva, proclaiming their loyalty to Valencia in an unchecked outburst of post-Euro 2008 joy, Benitez will now focus his attentions on the Balaeric playmaker.

He has already seen a £9.5 million bid turned down by Espanyol, who want something more in the region of £19 million.

Tottenham Hotspur are also ready to resist the power of Rafa's filthy lucre by telling him that their striker Robbie Keane is not for sale at any price, including any deal that involves Peter Crouch .

The north Londoners' own Spanish manager, Juande Ramos, has had a taste of rejection from his homeland himself, as his attempts to bring his former Sevilla protégé, winger Diego Capel , to Spurs have hit a stumbling block.

Even though the spend-happy club have bid the amount that triggers the 20-year-old's release clause, Sevilla claim that clause only counts for Spanish clubs, meaning they don't have to play ball. This could kick off some bitter and tedious legal duelling between the two clubs.

Let's have a drum roll, fanfare and an explosion of confetti for that rarest of things - a Manchester United transfer rumour.

While all the talk has been of Alex Ferguson signing Tottenham striker Dimitar Berbatov, reports today suggest that he is lining up River Plate striker Falcao if that long, protracted affair does not come to fruition.

However, Fergie would have to fight off interest from Real Madrid and Juventus for the right to dish out £15 million on the Colombian striker, who has been scoring at a rate of almost two goals every three games for the Argentinian side.

It looks as though the unrepentant adoration of Frank Lampard from Chelsea fans will be tested to breaking point next season, as it seems likely that he will see out the final year of his contract before moving to Inter on for free in the summer, denying the Blues what would have been a no doubt bumper cheque.

Inter boss Jose Mourinho said: "For the next season it will be easier for him to join me at Inter. I'm 100 per cent sure in 2009-10 he will be playing here. This season? I don't think so." Lampard is due to hold talks with new manager Luiz Felipe Scolari next week about his future.

The transfer of Didier Digard from Paris Saint-Germain to Middlesbrough continues the drag along interminably, but has taken an interesting twist as the French club have voiced their doubts that the club will actually pay up.

A PSG statement read: "Twelve days after an agreement, the directors are still waiting for bank guarantees from the English club." Let's just hope for Boro fans' sakes that this guy is worth it.

Sunderland are ready to make Darren Bent the highest-paid player at the club if they sign the striker from Spurs.

They are also still trying their best to lure their long-term targets, Reading midfielder Stephen Hunt and Celtic winger Aiden McGeady, to Wearside, and club chairman Niall Quinn is kidding nobody by saying it's not just because they're Irish.

Quinn said: "We do have a big Irish connection, but we don't purposely go out to sign Irish players. If there are two players, we'd go for the one we wanted the most, not the Irish one."

Elsewhere, Fulham are stalling over their bid for Croatia defender Josip Simunic as Hertha Berlin want £5.5 million, Everton reckon Pablo Aimar's floppy haircut alone is worth paying Real Zaragoza £8 million for, and Hull City boss Phil Brown continues to feed his ex-Bolton player cravings by targeting Bernard Mendy and Stelios Giannakopoulos.

The Two Ronnies

Ronaldinho has said it would be beautiful to join Big Phil at Chelsea: "It's marvellous that Scolari is interested in signing me because he's an excellent manager. If this opportunity to work with him again comes off it will be beautiful."

Meanwhile, Cristiano Ronaldo has ruffled the feathers of Robinho's agent Vagner Ribeiro, who doesn't like the fact that his 10 per cent hinges on Manchester United selling the Portuguese to Real Madrid.

He said: "Neither Robinho nor I like the fact that Real Madrid can use him as part exchange in their bid to sign Cristiano Ronaldo," said Ribeiro.

"We don't like this attitude and we want Madrid to start valuing Robinho because at the moment they're not."

  1. Pêche can also mean peach.
And muideen, that Allah forbids you a sense of irony is indeed a great shame, but perhaps if you learned to write English more effectively, you might actually begin to comprehend it better, and learn when to take a joke. Or is humour a no no as well? You might even begin to acquire some respect for one of the world's fluffiest, most cuddlesome and enduringly spiffing multi-racial societies, like it or not.
But you know, I think we have more in common than you might think... bad diet, sodomy and an unnatural fondness for obese children spring to mind.

  3. ur all having a go at rafa about signing spnanish players but lets face it they r the only players who have really worked out at Liverpool so far! Gonzalez any1??? or maybe ud all prefer 2 keep hold of Ant LeTallec???

Rafa has brought in quality from spain such as torres, alonso, garcia and even arbeloa is becoming more than what i eva expected of him! plus rafa isnt afraid 2 change his ideas... garcia's already gone... and crouch and alonso looks 2 be on their way with the hopeful addditions of Barry, Keane and Albert Riera things can only b looking up!

those of u who think that Villa and Silva r realistic targets shud probably start donating money 2 the club quick coz thats gonna be at least £50 mil after the Euros.

GET ON BOARD AND LETS ALL START SUPPORTING THE MANAGER!!! LFC TILL I DIE!!!

  6. Yup, English players are definitely among the best players in the world. You can tell from there fantastic run in euro 2008 fin- oops.
Yeah, Exactly. Perhaps if most of these players weren't plying there trade in the english premier league each and every week, Then English players might have a chance.

Refresh my memory. When was the last time an English player topped your goal scoring chart?
And when was the last time that "world class striker" Wayne Rooney scored more than 13 goals in a season?
The word "Prolific", springs to mind.

Your players are overpriced. Would Real Madrid pay 18 million for Garry Barry?
They probably don't even rate him as a championship player, Nevermind a world class one.

The only English player worth more than 15 million is Steven Gerard in my opinion.
    He's really good.

  8. Let's face it, foreign players (including the Scots) come to England not simply to play football; they come because deep down they all want to be English (or anything but Scots). This is a wholly understandable desire and we should not criticise anyone for following their dreams.
I always wanted to be a drug-addled lady-boy, and that's exactly what I am, but more importantly, I am English and as proud of my fine heritage as I am of the very sporting Thai (but English at heart) silk shift that I am wearing.
Besides which, foreign players aren't here to bomb our excellent public transport system, rape our Mothers or turn all our sisters into crack whores (or fallen women, if the site censor doesn't allow that expression), as ALL asylum seekers are. Indeed, foreign players add much to our society with their erudite observations and oily charm.
It is high time we all learned to live together! I would be happy to have Riera board with me until the immigration services certify his new nationality... though I admit that might not be much use to him as I live in Tokyo.

  9. Think Gers Fan is in a bit of a dream world really!! I agree that if rangers and celtic want to move into the english leagues, they should be made to start at the bottom and work up, but I wouldn't put any bets on them even reaching the premier league within 5 years, let alone be pushing for the title!!

    From nitewing1204, on Thu 3 Jul 12:51AM
  10. why and how could rangers or hate to say it ....celtic ..join top flight ...
they should start at the bottom and work up ...like every club in this league ...div 3 ....see how much you can buy then .....

  11. You clowns can slag off scottish foootball all you want but English premiership's no much better, there's only 2 good teams (Chelsea + Man Utd) who contest the league every year, then there's the 2 dreamers (Arsenal + Liverpool), then theres a small cluster of teams fightin for europe! If Rangers, and i hate to say it, Celtic joined the English Prem they would be challenging for the title within 5 years! They both have a strong fan base and with the £100 odd million a year revenue it wouldn't be long til they had much better players! That's why the English clubs voted "no" to lettin them join because they know they would be challengin and maybe eventually dominate and they couldn't handle that!!!

  12. Real Madrid are a rubbish establishment . . with all the money in the world they continue to underperform in the champions league . . they can buy ronaldo but they will never have the passion of manchester , for him to show his class in front of the fans

  13. what's with this 'english players are trash' talk? ridiculous! the price tag might be inflated (see: gareth barry), but manchester united field rooney, carrick, brown, scholes, hargreaves, ferdinand & a pretty decent welshman in ryan giggs, and last time i checked, they were doing okay for themselves. even if chelski is committed to buying half of the available players on all continents, john terry is probably their most important player, and when they won two league titles, no one scored more important goals than the cherub formally known as frank lampard. any doubt steven gerrard was the best player on the liverpool side that won the european championship? arsenal does play a nice style, but maybe they wouldn't have taken such a nose dive at the end of the season if they had a little english "character" (or at least patrick viera's french equivalent). english players are among the best in the world, perhaps not on par with brazil, but that's not exactly a crime.

From master shake, on Wed 2 Jul 10:31PM
  14. let go of lampard. that lad only knowz to cataput ballz in the net, and if non of that chance arise, he z nowhere.check him in big games, hez nowhere. we have our own deco now, time to see some footwork. no namez this season. let perfomance be the criterion for squad selection. lay off the lamps, philips, drogbas we have had enough of them. Buy quaresma this time Big Phil pliz.English pleyaz are trash, no talent no nothing jus a bunch of rigid pple

  15. salary cap? why don't we move the league to china with the rest of the communists? how about newcastle, west ham, tottenham, city, villa & everton spend a little of that cash they get for their young players? how does liverpool keep outperforming these clubs with an inferior stadium? it's because the fans won't stand for the owners keeping every penny for themselves. you minnow supporters just throw your hands in the air and give up the minute you see man u & chelski buying players, "oh no, we can't compete!". well, why don't you try? when you spend 50 million on your first XI, and the league HANDS you over a hundred million pounds just for playing ~ the money is going somewhere.

  18. This article is about the English Premier League, but of all the names mentioned, only 3 are English: Crouch, Lampard and Bent.

Meanwhile, with all these foreign names being linked to English clubs, how many English players are linked to foreign clubs? In this article, Lampard is the only one, and as far as I remember, Lampard has been the only one of any significance since Beckham was chased by that American pub team.

People keep saying that England didn't make the Euro 2008 because there were too many foreign players.

So is it because the owners and managers are overlooking the English players?

Or is it because they HAVE looked at them but decided they were not good enough, a conclusion shared by foreign managers?

From Rexy, on Wed 2 Jul 7:27PM
  19. You have only to know the nationality of a manager , to realise what nationality he would prefer his players to be .....Wenger Arsenal ( French ) obviously ...when he fielded not one english player in a premiership game .English football has long since ......NOT been english football
