Ecclestone keen to see Vettel at Ferrari

Thu 02 Jul, 09:14 AM

Earlier this week, perhaps because Formula One is in a rare news trough, a report in the newspaper Diario AS caused an international stir.

The Spanish publication named September 11 2009 as the date on which Fernando Alonso will – perhaps - be unveiled as a Ferrari driver for the next five years.

But also in the report was the suggestion that the Italian team may be planning a wholesale change, with Sebastian Vettel also in its sights.

The Vettel element of the story was picked up by Germany's major daily Bild, adding that Bernie Ecclestone is also keen to see the 21-year-old in a red car but that it might not happen for contractual reasons until 2011.

Red Bull's Christian Horner said: "Bernie is sort of like Sebastian's secret manager. He likes him very much and watches out for him.

"But why would Sebastian want to leave us? At the moment we're at the front and Ferrari are not," the team boss added.

  3. Rich L you are so kind dear sir.

So if I am to understand your words of wisdom. Mr Eccelscake is a shameless @#$% (or is there a word for a gentleman variety, if Mr Eccelscake is indeed a gentleman) who has too much power, and makes some people like him, by giving favours to little boys with red cars. This means that some other people don't like him because he does not give them presents, and things, like 100 million, and therefore they get the mardies? That really he should not be saying which little boys should have red cars or what should be done with those red cars, because it is none of his business, but he is an interfering type powerful individual.

Is that what you were saying? My intellect has needed a lot of help so it must be poor I had to go back to school several times. I also think I am more like a cheese mouldy round the edges

  5. Berni is being a clown as usual...Ferrari will bounce back and Vettel is an exceptional driver, does he want a repeat of the Schumacher era?, better that Seb stays at Red Bull and wins a couple of championships there,

  6. A Alonso-Vettel combination will certainly take points off each other, not good for chance of winning WDC. For the constructor championship, it is most certain a win, assuming the car is good.

  7. Vettel and Alonso in the same team. How would that work, even if they get along perfectly. They are both top drivers and would be taking points away from each other. Ferrari were the ones that perfected having one main driver and one in a support role. Didn't they prove the last couple of years that two equal drivers only hurts the team.

Brawn and McLaren have the driver lineup set up this year. Rubens and Kimi are only helping there teamates, not taking points away (when/if McLaren score anymore points). Alonso learned this at McLaren. If Lewis had not tried to "battle" Alonso (think Hungary) and used the year to learn then Alonso would have won another title and Lewis would have learned sooo much. As it happened they both lost the title and Lewis tried to teach Alonso. This line up just doesn't seem to be the smartest.

  9. HELEN dear,
This all has nothing to do with Mr Ekky, and that is the bad part of it. He obviously and shamefuly defers to Ferrari at every opportunity, and for someone who has that much infulence and power, that is not a good thing for the sport. One can only imagine the hard feelings and resentment felt by the other teams, especially ones that must run on a very limited budget. And remember, these are not the most mature and humble people on the planet. Oh, and Helen, something tells me that your intellect is not dubious, and as for advancing years, like a fine wine, we are only getting better!

  10. rab. it would definitely not be like 1996 all over again. back then schumacher joined and formed about him a dream team. and like it or not he did because he used his charisma as much as his speed and intelligence on track. whereas vettel - like raikkonen - would just join ferrari as a driver. and unless they give him a strong ride he won't make all that much difference.

he won't bring what Schumacher brought not in a million years. schumacher polished a turd that year and against the odds made it shine... well shine ish anyway !!

  16. now being, as you might say only a female of the species, of somewhat dubious intellect and advancing years, I would greatly appreciate your support in understanding the on earth this has to do with Ecclescake.

Can any dear soul enlighten one?

  17. If anyone needs proof that Ferrari gets special treatment from both the FIA and the FOM, its the fact that Bernie ALWAYS trys to steer the best drivers there. If this is what he does in public, you can just imagine what happens behind the scenes (like in the revenue sharing issue) It's too bad that Formula One isn't lead by someone who wants to see fair, equal treatment of all teams. Someone who loves the sport and its great history (not just the history of one team). Someone like Jackie Stewart!

    From sdcharger717, on Thu 2 Jul 5:10PM
  18. Bernie go stick your monkey fingers in a midget's pot of soup, if you really love F1, why try to push all the decent drivers to Ferrari, what's wrong with Red Bull? Aren't they beating the pants off Ferrari at the moment? Or are you part of the Ferrari I.A. Jerk!!!

From edward, on Thu 2 Jul 4:42PM
  19. The poison dwarf is an idiot, i can think of no other sport where the head honchos openly favour one particular team. If people ever wanted evidence that F1 is run by ferrari and not the FIA here it is. I have said this before and will say it again, why dont ferrari feck off start their own series with Bernie as the boss and race 20 red cars and let F1 go back to being about the sport?

From stewart, on Thu 2 Jul 4:41PM
  20. please be patient grandpa, Vettel will surely go to Ferrari in some years. thats not a surprise!
