Barca readying offer for Mascherano: press

BARCELONA, Spain (AFP) - Barcelona is readying an offer of 20 million euros for Liverpool's Argentine midfielder Javier Mascherano, a Spanish newspaper said on Thursday.

Barca's technical director, Txiki Begiristain, has received permission from Liverpool's Spanish manager Rafael Benitez to make an offer for the 25-year-old Argentine captain, the Catalan daily Mundo Deportivo said.

However, this "does not mean that the 'Reds' are ready to accept" it, the paper said.

Benitez also told Begiristain that he is "not thinking of releasing the player," the newspaper said.

  5. these clubs,i mean barca and Madrid are just looking­ for a way to destroy other teams and it is a shame­ masch and Alonso do not realize that.
    Liverpool strong­ midfield is a threat to them and now they want to use­ their money power to break it and monopolize the­ football competition.
    If they want to go...fine.I­ believe they are not loyal and probably not in the­ future plan of liverpool.

    i think babel has been so­ loyal...because these guys have better chance than him­ in the team but he is still putting himself in the­ Liverpool project.

    Players will come and go but the­ GREAT LIVERPOOL REMAIN FOREVER.

I came to realize that­ Liverpool is the best comp. for Man U.. curse Real and­ Barca.. especially Real.. I don't really know if it's the media abusing­ their creative freedom but what Barca and Rel are doing­ if the players can't see it is killing playing­ opportunities for the best players as they hoarde and­ monopolise. Leaving other teams around with gaping­ holes as players forget loyalties and look to live like­ royalties. It's sad that if Masch does go it shows­ how short his momory is as he was lost in the void of­ the hammers debacle. For Rafa to turn it around and­ leave him where he is as Argentina's captain and­ for him to turn his back if it's true and even­ Alonso then so be it. Liverpool is bigger than any­ individual. It's been the way and it will be the­ way. Liverpool is more than just a great legendary­ football club but an ever growing family that spreads­ across the globe. So if they want ti go so be it sad as­ it may be. There aren't anymore Stevies or Carras­ or Le Tissiers left. We just have to realise that. Just­ make sure if they go and if teams want them 40 million­ and above for each individual or no play. If they can­ pay 80mil for a diver they can surely sort out their­ finances for real Class and Grit players, Or a one for­ one exchange. There's Iniesta, Xavi and a whole lot­ of excess. Get REAL and you're BARCAing up the­ wrong bloody tree. YMWA.

  15. Mascherano is for sure worth more than 20 mill. I­ think if any team wants to sign him they will have to­ put up 25-28 mill, and i don't know why Barcelona­ even wants him because their midfiled is already rock­ solid with iniesta, xavi, yaya, and Busquets who i­ think is going to be a great player in the upcoming­ years.

    It looks as though Mascherano and Alonso will both be­ leaving Anfield sooner rather than later. Can you blame­ them? Yet another season without a medal. The fact is­ though that Liverpool will be a weaker team without­ them. All them draws last season could well be defeats.­ A champions league place could well be beyond Liverpool­ next year.
