Joey Barton was back at Newcastle for the first time since he was told to stay away from the training ground by Alan Shearer.
The 26-year-old turned up for the first day of pre-season training at the club's Darsley Park headquarters at 9.47am as he and his team-mates began preparations for the new campaign.
Barton was told to stay away after a stand-up row with then boss Shearer in the wake of his sending-off at Liverpool on May 3, an offence which ruled him out of the final three games of the Premier League season.
His future remains a matter of some speculation with the club certain to move on many of their high earners as they prepare for life in the Championship.
Chris Hughton and the remaining members of the coaching staff will work with the players before heading off for a training camp in Ireland on Sunday.
Five international players - Damien Duff, Sebastien Bassong, Jonas Gutierrez, Geremi and Xisco - have been given extra time because of their exertions with their countries since the end of last season, while Michael Owen, Mark Viduka, Claudio Cacapa, Peter Lovenkrands, David Edgar and Ignacio Gonzalez are all now out of contract.

MAKE YOUR MIND UP BOY!!!!!!
Cameron, there's an old saying which goe's like this.
"Give them enough rope, and they will hang themselves".
Just about sums you up.
HA HA Cameron, bet a little void I'm afraid, EVERY safc game home and away live in the town, guess it comes down to who's delivering the feed does it? ha ha it was coming live from Bulgaria last season!! Still at least our games will be worth watching . . . .Scunthorpe . . .mmm . . doesn't really get the flutterbys going in the ole stomach does it?
i think we all need to start over, hopefully we will soon have new owners, with a bit more sense than our last one, and newcastle can go forward and on to glory...

Neither am i!
impact, can you please reply to my comment 15 on the houghton backs players article
john connolly....not a bit of it.
newcastleian, your not buying that shyte are you
You see how annoying he is!
Endless posts of inane c(rap) and then he comes out with that!
I just do not get this guy at all!
newcastleian,It's just getting a bit late in the day,its quiet on that front at moment so that could be encourageing. My feeling is that the present hirarchy are happy to go along with this situation,as the fan base is virtually guaranteed.A few wins will also ease the anger and frustration.Ashley will be aware of this, all he needs to do is stay in the background and let things take there course.Should the rot continue, then expect wholesale changes. Now if,if Freddie makes an appearance you can expect more of the same.Hence my comment about the doldrums.
Ideally,Toon need to be restructured from top to bottom, and of course that will take time and loads more cash. The time in the premiership has been sadly neglected for many many reasons.Anyway,on a more positive note. Now is Toons time, with any luck and honest graft when, when they return the lessons will have been learned.
It's very difficult for Toon situation,Ashley should have stayed like most other owners, invisible, instead he put himself on a pedestal,so when things began to go wrong he and he alone took the flak.Anyway good luck and good fortune to all at Toon,i think they have had their fair share of banter.enough is enough.
He isn't even a sunderland supporter guys . . trust me, i know he is not.
He's just a sad soul, and this is the only contact with the outside world he has - that's the truth.
I remember when he has come on here giving it 'we' and 'us' and all that, trying to pass himself off as a Geordie.
The mackems are that daft, they've accepted him as one of theirs . . . gullible fools, but then again they'll accept anybody won't they!
barry granny tranny impact pianoplayer f ann y, I wish you would ferk off with your copy and paste. We have been able to do that for years, it's old hat man, try working on your spelling and also the use of the space bar. If you can't find it I'll give you a clue, only the one mind, It's the biggest key you will ever find in your life and right in front of your miserable little face.
