Championship - Barton returns to Newcastle

Eurosport - Thu, 02 Jul 12:28:00 2009

Joey Barton was back at Newcastle for the first time since he was told to stay away from the training ground by Alan Shearer.

The 26-year-old turned up for the first day of pre-season training at the club's Darsley Park headquarters at 9.47am as he and his team-mates began preparations for the new campaign.

Barton was told to stay away after a stand-up row with then boss Shearer in the wake of his sending-off at Liverpool on May 3, an offence which ruled him out of the final three games of the Premier League season.

His future remains a matter of some speculation with the club certain to move on many of their high earners as they prepare for life in the Championship.

Chris Hughton and the remaining members of the coaching staff will work with the players before heading off for a training camp in Ireland on Sunday.

Five international players - Damien Duff, Sebastien Bassong, Jonas Gutierrez, Geremi and Xisco - have been given extra time because of their exertions with their countries since the end of last season, while Michael Owen, Mark Viduka, Claudio Cacapa, Peter Lovenkrands, David Edgar and Ignacio Gonzalez are all now out of contract.

Barton is a street boy . He needs a manager who can handle him and who is as rough as he is! That's the only way to get the beast out of the man. In the meantime, the guy, needs counselling for anybody to understand the character. Give him a chance! We have seen players as bad as him who turned out to be reformed characters.
If I was a manager, I would handle him easily!

  7. I am a Forest fan (happy now Cameron?). Barton is not a professional footballer. He demeans that label which can be applied to his team-mates and fellow professionals. He is just a thug. But that can also be said of the likes of Bowyer, Woodgate, etc. But they appear to have learned their lesson. Barton has not and will not.

  8. You may be pleased to know that even as a Sunderland fan I've just given the "thumbs up" to all comments before mine. The really sad thing though is that you may find that you are stuck with him (I don't think even Big Sam would buy him off you) and on that basis, given that he will be earning big money, the new regime (whoever they may be) are likely to want him playing to earn his wages. On the positive side, he probably won't play for too long before assaulting an opponent and getting red-carded, followed by a lengthy ban. He's had the chance to do what 1000's dream of and wasted it all. What a @#$%.

  11. If Barton stays a NUFC I would strongly recommen they send him out on loan, if he does not agree to this stick him in the reserves and bench and tell him straight he is no longer part of the club set up. That way he will either lash out so they can fine him his wages and save some money or he will finally use his head and seek a move, either way you really do not want his influence around at a time you are needing to get back up. Who thought he was worth 0k a week wages in the first place is beyond me?
