Scunthorpe have missed out on on Liam Trotter after the young midfielder agreed a new one-year deal at Ipswich.

The 20-year-old made 14 appearances for the Iron in a loan spell last season, and boss Nigel Adkins was keen to sign up the player with his contract at Portman Road having expired.

However, new Town boss Roy Keane has acted quickly to re-sign Trotter before the Iron could make a deal themselves.

"I'll admit I was a bit surprised. At the end of last season I thought I would be moving on. I enjoyed my time at Scunthorpe and their manager wanted me to sign," said Trotter.

"But with a new manager it's a fresh start. The manager has said I'll get the chance to show what I can do and that's probably the major factor in me staying."
