La Liga - Benzema to join Real Madrid

Eurosport - Thu, 02 Jul 08:53:00 2009

Karim Benzema is set to join Real Madrid after Lyon accepted an offer of 35 million euros (£30m) plus add-ons for the France striker.

FOOTBALL 2008-2009 Lyon - Benzema - 0

The agreed fee, which could rise to 41m euros dependent on performances, was announced on Les Gones' website.

"Several days ago Karim Benzema told club president Jean-Michel Aulas of his wish to join Madrid - who were always his preferred destination after Lyon - more quickly than originally thought," the Ligue 1 club said.

"The player wanted take the opportunity offered to be one of the key players in Madrid's ambitious new policy to collect some of the biggest players in the world.

"Lyon accepted Benzema's decision and we negotiated terms that pleased all parties concerned.

"The club would like to wish Benzema the best of luck with Real Madrid and that he gets the greatest benefit from an ambitious sporting and economic package which - given the different funding, sponsorship, fan-base and stadium size - we in France cannot compete with."

Radio Cadena Ser reported he will sign a six-year contract with the Spanish giants.

Club president Florentino Perez said that their next big signing would be presented "tomorrow", Thursday July 2.

France international Benzema is Madrid's third big-money summer signing following the acquisitions of Kaka (£60m) and Cristiano Ronaldo (£80m).

He has scored 37 Ligue 1 goals in the past two seasons for Lyon, with nine in 15 Champions League matches.

Premier League champions Manchester United were linked with the player after they received full payment from Real for Ronaldo's world-record move.

Both clubs are also thought to be interested in signing Bayern Munich's French attacking midfielder Franck Ribery.

  1. I know they absolutely destroyed my beloved United in the Champions' League final but I will certainly be hoping that Barca win La Liga this season.

Madrid have a GREAT history, something to be truly proud of, but I don't like the idea of titles being 'bought'.

Of course there's jealousy... every supporter would love their club to have that kind of revenue at hand.. but the old romantic in me wants to see the big shot stumble.

  3. andrew f - I agree with you 100%. The only hope Real Madrid have with all those egos is to have Kaka be the leader of the team. He is down to earth, humble and focused solely on winning. He can probably teach Ronaldo a thing or two in these categories which would make Ronaldo an even greater player. It's a lot to ask of Kaka but he really is Real's only hope of not having another Galaticos failure. If it works (transforming egos into a team of talented and humble players focused on winning) then this Real Madrid squad could be something special for the ages.

  6. Even togh Real Madrid have big names in the club , it doesn`t mean that they will win everyting and i will tell u why .
Ronaldo will consider himself as the best there is in the dresing room and it will end up going to his head because the fans love Kaka` and eventualy Benzema because they love there fans back and they play fairly without any acting or facking like C.Ronaldo does .Ronaldo is only there for the money for sure and because it is a beutiful City where a lot of famous woman go as C.R already spotted Paris Hiltin 2 nights after he arrived !!!!!
plus C.R is always showing off . u can tell by d way he shoots a freekick !
But still I dont believe Benzema is worth that much beacause if u think like that Torres from 27mil , he should be worth like 42mil because Torres is 10 times better then Benzema
    Hope u ike it .

  9. I think that all of these players that are in such a hurry to join Real Madrid should take a step back and have a good hard think . How the hell will they fit all of those massive egos in the changing room .
Without doubt they are all fantastic players that have stood out in their previous teams . But how will the likes of Ronaldo cope by not being the centre of attention. I think the only player that will thrive by being at Real will be Kaka. He is an amazing player that doesn't crave all the media attention .
I also think that Madrid will implode under all of the expectation it has placed on it's shoulders .
I am a Manchester United fan but I still think that Barcelona are THE best club side in the world by a very long way .

  11. True, Real Madrid have more financial fire-power (albeit unfair) than any club in the world. But they are bound to dissappoint their fans next season and beyond. The expectation is now so incredibly enormous and in reality, unrealistic. With this new squad they are expected to win abolutely everything: CL, La Liga, Copa del Rey etc. I just think that despite their superstar players, there is still a lot of parity amoungst the elite clubs in the world, and I include Chelsea, ManU, and Liverpool in that category.

  14. With Kaka, Ronaldo, Benzema & probably Ribery, I think the only GALACTICO left for Perez to sign is GOD. Fortunately He is not a Transfer option available to Real Madrid. The host of GALACTICOS have failed in the past. No Guarantee that they will succeed this time. As a team I feel, BARCELONA are still better...

  15. So much beef for REAL, Y??? we now have financial experts that predict their financial collapse (last time arround, florentino did the same and made real the richest club in the world) Others that call them names Franco hitler and so on. Others that say they bribe. My God Y.
Y are u all displaying 1) the little jealous child u have inside 2) the racist part of u 3)fabricate stories to actually look more credible.
What Madrid has that will be almost impossible to copy in the EPL
    1) a fan base bigger than most people can imagine
    2) Gracious in defeat and Humble in Victory (if I´m wrong correct me, but i actually watched the fans applaud Ronaldinho and Messi when they were humiliated in their own stadium by their eternal rivals)
    3) Make profit from their investments (and I don´t mean by selling their stars)
Simply put the REAL MADRID FANS deserve the best and Florentino is giving it to them, doesn´t always translate to trophy's but I believe they´ll give it a good try. And that's why Real Madrid is the greatest team in the world by a big margin.
Newcastle will be back next year. GO LOONS

  16. To all people criticising real madrid, you are just jealous for what real madrid can do to strenghten their team for this coming seasons unlike your team who can,t afford to spend money to strenghten it.

  17. Big big mistake by Benzema. He is going to spend more time on the bench than on the pitch. It's a shame because he's talented with a lot of potential. He would have a much brighter future at ManU or even Arsenal. I think Arsenal would have been a better fit for him considering all the french players (& coach) on that team and the fact they currently lack a potent threat up front. He'd start every game if he had joined Arsenal...

  19. Im a Barcelona fan and should Madrid not win anything this term i will be more then happy ......

This will end Real Madrids as a club in a few years time they will be bankrupt and most likely relegated.....

Ronaldo ALONE will cost them £200million (£80 million for his transfer fee) And the rest in his contract which will increase 25% EACH YEAR....
