Premier League - Arsenal chief wants salary cap

Eurosport - Thu, 02 Jul 10:46:00 2009

Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis believes the Premier League should consider a salary cap in a bid to achieve financial stability.

FOOTBALL 2008-2009 Premier League Arsenal Cesc Fabregas - 0

With Manchester City dominating the summer's transfer headlines with reports of huge fees and wages being offered for top stars, Gazidis has called for a greater responsibility from top-flight clubs.

"I think it is worth our while to investigate whether there are elements of the salary cap system, which they have in US NFL and baseball (sic), which would benefit football," Gazidis told The Guardian.

"Clubs have a duty to provide more stability in our business models and some form of wage restraint is one element worth looking at.

"There are many ways in which it could work."

Gazidis joined Arsenal last year after working as the deputy commissioner of Major League football, which employs a salary cap.

  1. Rehan, you obviously know alot about football mate, Arsenal have no choice but to buy. Even if that means going into debt, otherwise it will be a terrible decline down the table and the yids would love that!

  2. I agree with jcservice completely. None of the others would ever find a place in the top 4 teams of EPL. The team sheet should be filled with players who could arguably walk to any other side. I am afraid none of the others (other than Rosicky, Fabregas, Van persie, Nasri and Arshavin) even stand a chance!!
If we have to go for youth, get the best out there - not these average boys.

  3. Lol! Why are Arsenal trying to confuse us with this stupidity, we dont want to resign the average players that we already have we want to buy new players to give us what we dont have. There are on 6 quality players at Arsenal, Rosiky, Fabrigas, Edwardo, Van persie, Nasri and Arshavin, the rest of the 22 are useless and very disposable. We will not finish 4th next year and Wenger will leave and take Fabrigas with him!

From Joseph, on Fri 3 Jul 10:17AM
  4. God help the Gunners if we have players like Ramsey, Wilshire in a starting XI against teams of the calibre of Man U, Chelsea, Liverpool, Man City, Real Madrid, Barcelona!!
    Out with these average starlets!!

  5. Well let the Spanish & Italian teams Buy all the best and greediest Players, then maybe the football league could get back to being more competetive, fairly staffed, and give every team the opportunity to play great football with an equal chance to win one of these trophies.. this would be with players who play for the game as well as the rewards, nowadays it seems the main reason is the financial rewards, or we are going, and with this IT LOOKS LIKE THE FANS COME SECOND..

  6. #22.
Baseball does infact have a salary cap, but its not a solid fixed cap as in football.
it works the same as in the NBA were teams can break the salary cap BUT each $ they go over it costs them double

  7. Actually Helen, comment #1, Major League Baseball dosen't have a salary cap. All the rest of the sports in the US do have one. Like the MLB, to put a salary cap in the Premier League just won't work. It would be too difficult. You're right though, the only way this would work would be if the different leagues in Europe and FIFA got togther to come up with a plan to make this work. The thing is, it will never happen. The reason is because of the players would end up taking a pay cut and the owners would get more money. The players and their agents will not allow that. It would be chaotic. For Ivan Gazidis to mention this idea was plain silly. He needs to worry about building a better team so that the Gunners can win a league trophy. It's been a long while.

  8. Ivan Gazidis this in not american sport , you know where you can stick your salary cap..you should cap your large salary first!! Typical arsenal looking to win trophies on the cheap...

  9. If i'm such a plonker then why did you give yourself the thumbs down?

  10. arsenal would want a salary cap, they are and have always been a bunch of cheap @#$%. pay your players more and they might want to stay. dont go crying when you still don't win any trophies next season.

  11. What a daft idea! I wonder how much wealth Mr Gazidis would have if his "earnings" were capped?. Plonker!

  12. I think that the whole of the football world should bring in a tiered system which is capped at each level. ( maybe levels 1-5 where players are rated on performance relative to each league level)

Top rate players all get the same wages and the transfer fees should be relative and so on at each level.

Players ratings could increase or decrease depending on their individual performance.

  13. Ivan Gazidis, a South African born Greek, whose experience of football (soccer) was in US Major League prior to Arsenal where he has been for 6 MONTHS!!!! is spouting on about salary caps in the UK??? God preserve us.

  14. During the '70's and early '80's the Spanish and Italian clubs paid the top wages, yet English teams dominated European competitions.

In certain countries like France teams have to show financial stability and are regulated. So there isn't a level playing field right now.

It would be down to the player, do you want success or do you want cash, that would be their decision like it always has been.

The bottom line is unless the EPL gets a grip the lack of competition will destroy the goose that lays the golden egg, no one here can say that todays EPL is as competitive as the '60's, '70's or '80's were.

We all know one of the top 4 are going to win it, and likely every other trophy as well, the only excitement is when small teams get to shock the top 4 once in a while.

Unless a salary cap and a transfer cap is introduced soon the gulf will be unbreachable, I can almost guarantee if they were introduced 3 of the top 4, not Arsenal, would join a Euro Super League, which wouldn't be a bad thing.

A salary cap certainly has made the NLF a lot more competitive, and their league has grown astronomically the past few years, with all teams sharing the revenue pool.

Quite honestly I thought the Championship was a better league as far as competition goes, the EPL is actually quite boring, as we know who's going to win it before a ball is kicked.

  15. if premier league has a salary cap (just like rugby), players will go abroad, it is a good idea to have a salary cap but it would need to a global thing and that just ain't gonna happen.

From Mersgoth, on Thu 2 Jul 1:20PM
  16. they only want it to keep the top 4 the same, they may not make the top 4 with clubs like city pay big wages to get the best player.

From amy, on Thu 2 Jul 1:18PM
  17. Why salary cap? This is a free market economy. Basic law of demand and supply will dictate. You want salary cap for the directors of the clubs or owners to get more richer at the detriment of players. If their is salary cap what happen to the excessive profit made by clubs, where do the money goes?

  18. Its really sad but true I will have to agree with shoi.sengupta, I dont know why Ramsey signing a new deal is such a big thing? This guy cant break into Arsenal first team can he. I think as earlier mentioned by shoi.sengupta, Arsenal need established signings and for World players to be attracted to your club you have to sign Big Players. Arsenal is just the perfect dream club for any world class player. They have history they challenge for honors every year or so.

All the arsenal board needs to do now is splash some cash. See Eboue, Gallas, Adebayor and buy a good defender and a good striker. David Villa still available go for him Wenger please go for him!!!!!! he will have almost immediate affect he'll link so well with Fabregas

  19. I think both the Arsenal's Chief Executive and the entire management team of the club lack ambition. They are not thinking of winning trophies; they are not thinking of of building a sustainable brand like their competitors are doing. How can a chief executive of an international brand be talking of salary cap when serious clubs are busy in the market attracting respected names and marketable brands into their squad. as I have said many times, Arsenal cannot expect to be using their inexperienced squad of youngsters to compete at the highest level for all competitions. In fact, they are unduly abusing these players. Who wants to know if the heavens will fall if other clubs are snatching top players from other clubs? Arsenal can continue to cap salaries and lose players to more serious, determined and ambitious clubs. I bet that if Real Madrid or Barcelona makes very serious offers for Fabregas and Arshavin with mouth-watering salaries, who cares about Arsenal and their salary cap? Can Arsene Wenger go to Barcelona or Real Madrid to use the clubs as breeding grounds? Certainly not. These clubs want to win trophies; they are not training grounds for players. They want success; they want to sustain their brands and images as successful clubs. They don't want to be also-ran. Arsene Wenger should not frustrate his young players out of Arsenal in search of greener pastures and success as players. After all, the goal of every successful player is to play for a successful club - a club that wins trophies at both national and international levels.Arsene Wenger doesn't appear to have that ambition, otherwise his ten-year period in Arsenal should have dictated a more aggressive reconstruction to attract top-flight players. A word is enough for the wise.

  20. Ok comment 6, I never said I don't have faith in Arsenal. What I did say is sometimes we have to face facts, football has changed (and not for the best) ever since big money investors have come into the game. There is no point in hoping things will change as it won't. When terraces were taken off people hated it because it killed the atmosphere but we will all know they will never come back. Same goes here. I think Wenger youth policy is commandable but its not working as well as we all hoped it would. 15 years IBM realise selling PC (their core business) was not going to sustain them, they changed into a service driven company. I think just injecting 2 or 3 big names is enough with the current team. And also no point in building in young team if as soon as they reach their full potential they wan to leave.

As for salary caps - I actually think its a good thing but it has to be applied at a European level - otherwise the premiership will become like the French League where they do have a cap.
