Eurosport - Thu, 02 Jul 10:46:00 2009

Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis believes the Premier League should consider a salary cap in a bid to achieve financial stability.

With Manchester City dominating the summer's transfer headlines with reports of huge fees and wages being offered for top stars, Gazidis has called for a greater responsibility from top-flight clubs.

"I think it is worth our while to investigate whether there are elements of the salary cap system, which they have in US NFL and baseball (sic), which would benefit football," Gazidis told The Guardian.

"Clubs have a duty to provide more stability in our business models and some form of wage restraint is one element worth looking at.

"There are many ways in which it could work."

Gazidis joined Arsenal last year after working as the deputy commissioner of Major League football, which employs a salary cap.

  2. comment no 5, if u are a true gunners, u should have full faith in your team, like i do, even when they have lots money or no money,,wenger doesn't need money to build his team, have faith in him..be a fan with dignity.

  3. What really frustrates me is to watch all these clubs signing up top players and all Arsenal can do is extend the contracts of current players. Benzema would have been a perfect player for Arsenal. Technically Arsenal should be the first choice club for foreign players: big stadium, great manager and based in the capital. But Manchester United (rightly so) and Chelsea (not so rightly) gets a lot of the big names purely on money. I think its really time for Wenger and the board to accept what modern football is all about, it might not be the right thing but its reality. If the current board can't do it then let either Kronke or Usmanov take over. With such a great fan base, infrastrusture, history and manager, proper finances would propel Arsenal back to the top. Otherwise its more than likely that we will drop out of the top 4 maybe not this year but over the next few seasons. And don't get me wrong the youth policy of Wenger is great and he should continue with it but the team needs a blend and more of WOW factor which is lacking at the moment. When was the last time the summer transfer window was really exciting for an Arsenal fan??? Tell you when, when Sol Campbell signed, and guess what happened that season? We did another double!

  4. Show me a club that requires some "financial stability" and i will show you that a salary cap has nothing to do with the problem.
The only people coming out with salary cap nonsense are at clubs that are unable to pay the same wages as CITY can.
Who i might point out are THE most financially stable club there is.
Mr Gazidis needs to stop advertising the fact that Arsenal (currently concidered one of the top4) are unable to attract top quality players to the club anymore..

  7. It would only work if it was an international salary cap. Otherwise, the Spanish and Italian leagues would just buy all the best players if they can offer more than English clubs. You might even get the likes of Terry, Gerrard or Rooney going overseas to get more money.
The only reason it works in the US, is because the NFL and Baseball are really only played there anyway.
