Goalkeeper Ross Turnbull has joined Chelsea on a four-year contract after leaving relegated Middlesbrough on a free transfer.
The 24-year-old former Boro trainee will compete with Portuguese shot-stopper Hilario as back-up to Blues number one Petr Cech.
Turnbull has spent time on loan at a host of clubs outside the Premier League, including Cardiff, Crewe and Barnsley.
He made 22 appearances for Boro last season but lost his place when Brad Jones returned from a spell out injured.

P.S Good Ridance to bad rubbish (Turnbull)
Can you explain how this moron rejected to the subs bench since when was it Jan 09, is a top goal keeper better than Brad Jones, dont get me wrong jones is rubbish but come on ,who was the keeeper at Boro for the majority of the season oh would that be Mr Turnbull, guess his rubbish keeping had nothing to do with relagation did it.
mortgageandmoneycentre - he wasn't messed about by the club or Southgate, in fact it was the other way round, he refused to sign a contract cos he wanted to be the 1st choice, when he was he still refused to sign cos he thought he was bigger than the club and demined a bigger contract.
The reason Southgate dropped him in favour of Jones was to prove that his demands where unacceptable and that no player is bigger than the club, should Turnbull accepted one of the decent contracts the club offered him, then he would have been playing ahead of Jones and would have been 1st choice, I believe from what I've been told Turnbull wanted £25k+ but since he'd not played much 1st team football in the Prem the club where offering £8K and then reviewing the contract over a number of seasons
I don't know why some Chelsea fans think this is a great signing, yes he's a good keeper and better than Brad Jones but at best at Championship level, he make too many mistakes even at his time on loan at Cardiff he made mistakes in his first few games then was dropped. The reason he left Boro was due to his insane wage demands, hence why no other club touched him, he also wanted to be 1st choice and when he was and was given decent contracts, he still wanted more.
They are far better English keepers these days than Turnbull and if he thinks that his International chances have increased, we'll he's going to be disappointed he had more chance playing for England if he was with Boro or another team where he was 1st choice than if he’s with Chealse.
Cech is miles better and then Turnbull and still yet to reach his peak and there is no way Turnbull will be playing 1st team football any time in the next 5 to 6 years, the beat he's going to get is reserve team football or loaned out to Championship, League 1 clubs unless some how both Cech and Hilário are unavailable at the same time.
Ross isn't a bad than keeper he's better Jones and the only reason Jones got back into the 1st team is because Ross wouldn't sign the new contract as this Chelsea move has been set up a long time.
RUBEN, by your definition that the 2nd goalkeeper defines whos a big team and who isnt then where chelsea the worlds biggest when we had cech and cudicini? they where two of the best keepers in the world.
I doubt that real madrid or barcelona would have considered signing turnbull but they arent an english team, Barcelonas 2nd keeper right now is Jorquera Fortia? a spanish keeper they signed when he was a youth player. are you saying barcelona arent a big team because they havent spent 10 million + on there 2nd goalkeeper?
ohh and real madrids 2nd keeper is also a spanish goalkeeper from there youth system. you might want to re think your definition of a big team ;)
funny chelsea think they are a big club !!!!!! i wonder if a real madrid or barca would buy a keeper like this, credit crunch musta hit roman baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaad lmfao
Good luck Turnbull, you were totally messed about by Southgate and Co. last season and deserve better. Being number 2 to Jones is an insult, nobody believes that he was the better keeper and we'll never know why he was selected because our club will not come out and tell us why. I believe that we would still be a premiership club if the management had made the correct selection and this single one selection issue has cost us very dearly.
hey lubov how can you say that barca beat chelsea? maybe you will be a chelsea fan next year, cause you just support team which wins trophies and next year chelsea will win everything.
kamo_footy, that's not chelsae dream team, no one wants pirlo at chelsea
that is great signing, i hope chelsea will buy at least two more players not end up with just one signing like they did last year, when only bosingwa appeared to be successful and deco was just a waste of money.
EAT MY DUST DUST EATERS :D
BLUES ALL THE WAY
Arsenal still the best and the most respected team in London.
This is actually good to read. I hope it represents a change in policy at Chelsea towrds chasing talented players cheaply and living within their means while everyone else goes out and spends their way into oblivion!:)
Chelsea Dream Team
Cech
Bonsingwa Terry Alex A.Cole
Essien
Lampard Pirlo
