Paul Hartley and Jan Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink have left Celtic after failing to secure contracts from new manager Tony Mowbray.
Existing deals for Scotland midfielder Hartley and Netherlands striker Vennegoor of Hesselink wound down this summer and both were allowed to leave by the former West Brom boss.
Mowbray hopes to bring Marc-Antoine Fortune in as a replacement for Vennegoor of Hesselink.
"I had a good long conversation with Paul. He came in to see me," Mowbray said.
"The outcome of that is Paul won't be offered a new contract. He is free to look for other employment.
"I have had no contact with Jan. Jan is out of contract - he is free to seek other employment and I'm pretty sure that's what he will be doing at the moment."
Nancy striker Fortune, rated at £2.5 million, spent the second half of last season on loan at West Brom and has also been interesting Hull City, Fulham and Portsmouth.
"Everything is in the balance," Mowbray said.
"I think it will happen naturally over the next day or two. I'll either be sitting watching him shaking someone's hand and holding a shirt up somewhere at an English club, or you will all come back here in a few days' time and meet the guy yourself."
Hartley, 32, was a late developer and rose to prominence playing for Hearts before his £1.1m move to the Hoops in 2007. He has been linked with a return to Tynecastle and also a move to Greece with Iraklis.
Vennegoor of Hesselink, 30, has seen his time at Parkhead blighted by injury since joining from PSV in 2006 and has been tipped to join another Greek team, Larissa.

you sad sad sweaty jocks get real no one is interested in your excuse for football it rates about as highly as the scunthorpe sunday league. you are all pathetic freaks who talk @#$%, are overweight and stupid
Big names, @#$% players. Good riddance!!!!
Sirsteve, wanna meet up at the 1st old firm game next season & you can discuss your point of view with me????
sirsteve stay off the kiddie fiddling talk, below the mark and not the place for it.
Inverkenny have to disagree with you son... Wee Aiden had one bad season - Simple, and what with all the off field shennanigans then it could be understandable. He is still young and will only improve... But the wee fella is a real talent... As for Skippy, his goals were a God send last season - He kept us in it. The problem wasn't skippy but the strikers around him. If we get a really good striker to work off him, he could be another George McCluskey. Add to that a good passer in midfield and a half decent left back and we might go places - What's with all the doom and gloom?
#187 Cheers Ginge, always nice to know there are some decent tic out there, would say the same for you if the need arose
& davejones feck off, leave the discussions to us big boys
But sirsteve you are racist, bigoted, and vile
Inver probalbly wouldn't be good at a computer manager game ON EASY!!!!!
stuart I also remember what Pauline G said after Tommy Burns funeral,he comes on here trying to fool us that he is inteligent,he is a pond life
paul g,what time do u start yir windea round lol
Paul G CHAMPION TURD BURGLAR
Inver, every day I thank God that you are not in charge at the club I support.
If God has taken him for his sin's then all chappel's would have to close cause all the preist's would be in JAIL BUT WHAT'S A PEDO UNDER THE COLLAR
Mowbray has not gone far enough, there needs to be a clear out, MacDonald and McGeady have to go too, when Celtic get a decent forward line you'll see the difference, Celtic, like Rangers, have just been signing forwards who can just pick up scraps but aren't good enough at the game to create their own or create for others, MacDonald and McGeady are not great players, anything but.
Point 204, your having a laugh aint you? We all know the past now shut it
Point 198, Celtic has always had the lower class people support them. FACT
Do you call not paying the guy 2 weeks wages beause they said he did not turn up to training when he was clearly given permission not to. Very petty ceptic. The guy was the most loyal player celtic ever had. All he wanted to do was play but celtic wouldnt let him because he didnt want to leave. Very Very out of order. Fifa will take you to the cleaners on this one as if you read the full article he has a very very strong case of being treated badly. The unions think so too. Lawell really needs to get a life.
Pt196...As a boss??? you should know the answer to this question.... does a verbal agreement stand up in a court of law?
Same old stories at ceptic park. I liked the balde one though. Celtic are trying to rip the guy off.
