Paul Hartley and Jan Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink have left Celtic after failing to secure contracts from new manager Tony Mowbray.
Existing deals for Scotland midfielder Hartley and Netherlands striker Vennegoor of Hesselink wound down this summer and both were allowed to leave by the former West Brom boss.
Mowbray hopes to bring Marc-Antoine Fortune in as a replacement for Vennegoor of Hesselink.
"I had a good long conversation with Paul. He came in to see me," Mowbray said.
"The outcome of that is Paul won't be offered a new contract. He is free to look for other employment.
"I have had no contact with Jan. Jan is out of contract - he is free to seek other employment and I'm pretty sure that's what he will be doing at the moment."
Nancy striker Fortune, rated at £2.5 million, spent the second half of last season on loan at West Brom and has also been interesting Hull City, Fulham and Portsmouth.
"Everything is in the balance," Mowbray said.
"I think it will happen naturally over the next day or two. I'll either be sitting watching him shaking someone's hand and holding a shirt up somewhere at an English club, or you will all come back here in a few days' time and meet the guy yourself."
Hartley, 32, was a late developer and rose to prominence playing for Hearts before his £1.1m move to the Hoops in 2007. He has been linked with a return to Tynecastle and also a move to Greece with Iraklis.
Vennegoor of Hesselink, 30, has seen his time at Parkhead blighted by injury since joining from PSV in 2006 and has been tipped to join another Greek team, Larissa.

"We are all working very, very hard to make these things happen," Mowbray said. "It's never easy. Players are just coming back from holiday, it's the same with managers and coaches.
Windae licker I take it Lawell wrote this speech for Moobs?
"We have made a lot of calls and a lot of contact and a lot of people have spoken to me as well. As I say to them, I want to look at the players. I don't want on day one to say yes, he can go out.
"I need to see them and see what their characters are. We have put markers down, we are further advanced with some potential signings than we are with others."
Ginger....good interview with Moobs in the paper today, he is saying all the right things and I hope he will administer them correctly.....Any news from IBROKE Park?

184 - I think you'd better retract METZ from your list, pal! there are several tims on here that get on well with the big guy! That includes ME!!
Mowbray must have some big singings up his sleeve if he is prepared to let Hartly go for nothing. They seriously lack a quality midfielder. They have lots of energy in brown and robson but nobody to provide a killer pass, no saying hartly had that either but when you look at ther midfielders it looks weak. Mowbary is a class coach so I expect a couple of top quality midfied signings, possibly Chris brunt, greening or morrison. I think he'll raid his old club
well J V H can go anytime, but I would have kept hartley (as a squad player). but scince strachan left ive always said the new manager's hands would be tied for transfers 2 players go to let the possibility of 1 player arriving. SHOCKING ST8 OF AFFAIRS @ PARADISE.
