Alexander Vinokourov will return to cycling when his two-year doping suspension ends this month and hopes to ride with his former Astana team.
"I want to announce that I will return to competitive cycling on July 24," Vinokourov said at a news conference in Monaco, where the Tour de France starts on Saturday.
"I do not see myself anywhere else than Astana. This team was created in 2006 with the Kazakh cycling federation; it is our baby."
He said negotiations were underway with the Kazakh cycling federation and team manager Johan Bruyneel.
"There are ongoing discussions. This team has been created for me, I do not see how an agreement could not be reached. "If there is no deal, Johan will have to leave the team," he added.
Vinokourov was banned for two years after testing positive for blood doping in the 2007 Tour de France. The 35-year-old has denied any wrongdoing.
He said he would probably take part in the Tour of Spain from Aug. 29 and in the world championships in Mendrisio, Switzerland, in September.
Vinokourov, who could join Spain's Alberto Contador and seven-times Tour champion Lance Armstrong at Astana, is also hoping to ride the Tour de France in the future.
"I am back for one or two years and I would like to do one more Tour de France and wear the yellow jersey, although I am realistic, I know I cannot win it," he said.
"I am doing this for my family, for the people of Kazakhstan and to regain the image I had before my ban."

Wow, this guy is something else. I used to have tonnes of respect for him because of how much a fighter he is, now I realize he's just a goof and it makes sense when Ulrech (doper) and Kloden (another ex T-mobile rider, mmm.....interesting he's still riding "clean") kept pulling him back a few years back.
Has I know a litlle bit of Johaal Bruyneel, the only coment he will make afterwards is that Vino is not welcome, and if they just hapen to want to choose between a Sports director that Was a part of 8 TDF wins, ( not mentioning the rest ) on a rider whos testostero is probably in his body ( you can see by the agressiveness and arrogance LOL !) I dont see that happen !!!
You have the Livestrong Team with all the riders and Astana with Vino with Kazack riders try to find a way to find some product that would pass the controls, so he can ride into glory and into oblivious once and for all ( Cheaters dont get recalled !) . So Vino go ahead and try...
Some of these comments are funny! When they talk about a rider who thinks the team revolves around them I thought they were talking about Armstrong not Vino.
Undoubtedly this guy should be banned for life as he really disgraced himself and the tour in 07. However the same should apply to all cheats and until it does, Vino can make a comeback, he wasn't a bad bike rider after all, a cheat certainly - but also a very capable rider
Astana certainly isn't big enough for two egos the size of small planets so either Vino or Amstrong will have to go - my money is on Armstrong to be kicked out/leave as the Khazak government will look after their own.
So you want to wear the yellow jersey again Vino? The only chance you have is to buy a souvenir jersey from the TDF boutique along with a polka dot jersey & a green jersey. You can also get a musette & a water bottle & then you can pretend you are a top cyclist again!
There`s no other way you`ll do it because ASO will not have you and therefore Astana will be barred from the 2010 race.
So Bruneel & Lance will after all have a new Livestrong/Trek team & take all the non Kazak guys with them.
You`re an arrogant thick arxxxhole
A new tean for Bruyneel and Armstrong - inevitable! What director could work with a rider who is openly prepared to undermine him and claims the team is his. People call Armstrong arrrogant! he is a saint next to Vino. Lets hope everything possible happens to make his comeback a failure and spells the end of Team Astana.
Vino is a penis
This is just a farce. They should introduce life bans for doping and crack down hard. It is the only way to deal with cheats like Vino etc.
Cyclecrank co uk
you think that Johan Bruyneel is happy having Astana as sponser? he was serieuselly thinking to end the contract with Astana even without your coming back.
sorry to say this..Alexander Vinokourov go F*k your self you wont erase history what you did was very bad for cyling you wont change that by coming back, As*hol
welcome back vino lol the russians were never famous for tact and thats fair enough, one thing is for sure if vino does come back i cant see the team staying the way it is it will haemorage all over the place and the result will be armstrong and bruyneel splintering off with the majority of the riders and leave the kazaks and vino mulling whether it was all such a good idea after all. vino is a one man show like him or not and is never going to be a team player so the whole team would have to be built round him cant see that happening with the present crop of astana riders.
jamesdalby3670, its about wot the people paying the money want and as that is kazak government its wot they want. i dont see them paying for the team without the kazak rider who the team was formed for. from some of the comments on here people dont realise there is cycling without lance
If Vino arrives on any team, the other top riders of the team will jump ship very fast, he's a liability until he calms down.
@everyone defending Bruyneel - Yeah, because there's no reason to doubt Bruyneel, of the ever-so-clean Manalo Saiz lead ONCE team, was clean. Obviously, his riders follow his whiter than white lead.
Yeah, let's get rid of the druggies - let's start with Bruyneel, and Riis.
For all you haters, Vino is the guy who has the HEART! Maybe he was a little overactive when saying that Johan would have to leave, He was just trying to say that it was his club and Johan was just a paid trainer. He is the guy who can beat anybody in the TDF. He just need some time to recover from all the problems he's had. ASTANA FOR LIFE. VINO RULES!!!
I agree with rory p, johan has done wonders for the sport and is without doubt one of the top managers to have moved cycling forward as a whole. all vino has done is push it back to the festina days of 98 and simply continued the 'bad' side of an amazing sport. all that my none cycling friends know of the sport is that of drugs thanks mostly to the media but if the riders didn't cheat then cycling could get on with progressing the amazing sport it is. i can't believe his arrogance! i remember him starting out and how strong he was, now all that memory is gone. i just see a cheat
If Vino comes back to Astana Johan will leave and form a new Team. Johan will take a majority of the current Team with him. The new Astana with Vino will either lose there pro Team license or not be invited to any major Tour races. In the end Team Astana will cease to exist due to Kazakh persistence to have Vino on the Team. Johan does not need this @#$% lets not forget Johan already missed 2008 Tour De France because of this cheating pile of ____.
Who on earth does this a*sehole think he is, he is a drug cheat, by rights he and the others should be banned for life.
And then to turn around and say, one of the greatest managers in cycling will have to leave the team, hell supprised the idiot did not threaten to stop the TDF.
Vivo has chance to be in the teame and he will be there !
Alliance, I'm sure it's not political, Vino did blood transfusions because two years ago it was believed that the authorities were unable to detect this form of cheating, but then instead of owning up to it like a man he took his whole team down with him. Not as bad as that creep Landis who has cost world cycling millions of dollars in lawsuits but still...
And Veloboy, we are all fully aware that the team was around long before Contador & Lance, but the point is now Astana are the hot Tour favourite and those riders have made it so - it isn't about whether they can let Vino back in as much as whether they should.
you are not alone, find your class y lover on _C lassymingle C om_ so dont miss the love in your life.
Maybe he will ride in Astana team car behind Armstrong during the prologue :)) and Borat will sit right beside him :))
Vino should not be able to sign with a Pro Tour team for 4 years after his ban ends.
However, I am not sure when that rule came into play, so if he cheated just before that rule started to apply (which might be the case) then he can sign with Astana. Otherwise they would have to downgrade their Pro Tour license in order to sign him.
