Burger: I'm not a thug

Thu 02 Jul, 05:02 PM

South Africa forward Schalk Burger has reacted to his eight-week suspension by insisting: "I am not a rugby thug."

Burger will miss Saturday's Test series finale against the British and Irish Lions at Ellis Park after being banned following a first-minute incident during South Africa's 28-25 win in Pretoria last weekend.

But he said: "As a proud South African and Springbok rugby player, I only have the utmost respect for the traditions of the wonderful game of rugby."

Burger was found guilty of making contact with the face in the eye area of Lions wing Luke Fitzgerald, but received only a yellow card. And despite issuing a statement, he has not publicly apologised either to Fitzgerald or the Lions.

Canadian judicial officer Alan Hudson, who heard the Burger case, said he did not find the player's actions intentional, but he did believe them to be "clearly reckless".

And Hudson added he was "unable to conclude" any eye-gouging on Burger's part, although he said contact with Fitzgerald's left eye could not be described as "insignificant".

"Through my life and career I have always approached the game with the intention only of playing it hard and fair," Burger added.

"I am not a rugby thug and will never intentionally engage in eye-gouging or similar illegal actions. This was also the case in the second Test against the Lions.

"I am therefore grateful that the judicial officer confirmed my stance with his conclusion that there was no deliberate eye-gouging as charged by the citing official.

"I will always play the game as hard as possible within the rules. I apologise to my supporters and fellow team-mates for the fact that I have been absent for the first 10 minutes of the second Test. I look forward to returning with zest in due course."

  1. Ruggers you write a lot of dung.
Burger is a great player, but he's also a bit of a thug. I tipped him for a card in the second test (on here actually) but I couldnt believe how quickly he delivered. Its his form is all. the fact that he hasn't apologised to fitzgerald says a lot. Accidental my hole.

  2. The Lions did not con gra tu late the Boks on a win and I am inclined to think to hell with them all they have been doing was beeyatch and mooaan all week whereas they drew first blood i.e spear tackle etc. also if you watch the replay of the incident you will see Pierre Spies going into the ruck and his elbow knocks Burger in the face which he probably took as a punch from Fitzgerald( and my goodness why is ur shorts pulled up so high mr Fitz.) and the result was he, Burger lashed out to the nearest target i.e Luke Fitz

  4. Burger has yet to apologise to his fellow player for his actions wheter intentional or accidental that is probably just as despicable , but then who can be surprised given the reaction to the incident by that god given talented idiot coach of his . S Africa still playing with a grudge , run by a manager with a grudge , and winning with all the Gracelessness I for one have come to expect from them . I look forward to their fall in the Tri Nations ...
