Gazidis wants salary cap

Thu 02 Jul, 08:52 AM

Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis believes the Premier League should consider a salary cap in a bid to achieve financial stability.

With Manchester City dominating the summer's transfer headlines with reports of huge fees and wages being offered for top stars, Gazidis has called for a greater responsibility from top-flight clubs.

"I think it is worth our while to investigate whether there are elements of the salary cap system, which they have in US NFL and baseball (sic), which would benefit football," Gazidis told The Guardian.

"Clubs have a duty to provide more stability in our business models and some form of wage restraint is one element worth looking at.

"There are many ways in which it could work."

Gazidis joined Arsenal last year after working as the deputy commissioner of Major League Soccer, which employs a salary cap.

  1. Lol! Why are Arsenal trying to confuse us with this stupidity, we dont want to resign the average players that we already have we want to buy new players to give us what we dont have. There are on 6 quality players at Arsenal, Rosiky, Fabrigas, Edwardo, Van persie, Nasri and Arshavin, the rest of the 22 are useless and very disposable. We will not finish 4th next year and Wenger will leave and take Fabrigas with him!

  2. Duncan is right, but AW should not be scared to spend, if the money is made available, then he should. At the moment the clubs are trying to compete in the market are causing player inflation across the board, not just world class players. Thats why ppl like Benzema are going for 25mil +, which is too expensive to say the least. But if Arsenal NEED somebody then we must spend. i.e strong midfielder, defender

now that arsenal are no longer finacially up there with the big boys all they do is whinge!!! P.S. man utd won the premiership with kids, so that is not an excuse. Please find another excuse because now that ronaldo has moved the real madrid the thing that is the most tedious thing is arsenals excuses for not being good enough!!

  6. Ramsey . . Average?
lol, the professor of football knows better than to offer long contracts to average players, he has truely got an eye for talent and has admitted defeat when he has been wrong (Bischoff for instance )
i think you'll find that Ramsey will become a regular premier league footballer and show us why he has caught the eye of at least a dozen clubs.
as for signing the best youngsters, when you can turn a £5K a week footballer either into a club assett or an enormous profit, why spend millions on players who may only have 1 good season left before deciding Real Madrid pay more or Milan have better looking hookers?
Arsene has already built a team for the future, and i think a top 4 finish is a great achievement for a group of boys the whole country wrote off at the start of the season.
i truly have the red blood of the gunners running through my veins and although the missing titles and cups are weighing down on many a gunner, only the true fans can watch this team with pride knowing that we dont go out and spend £150M a season to lift the trophy, we do the best to achieve the best we can while those efforts reflect the trouble the current economic climate is in right now, and still compete without debts that endanger the very existance of the club should bad times occur (as many teams have suffered lately)

i say Arsene is a genius and although the time ahead will be hard, my heart will reside in an Arsenal shirt and my confidence will remain with the professor of football.

    Dear Wenger,
Really sad times for the gunners. When the best players are being lapped by all the top clubs, we are handing out contract extensions to average players like Ramsey!! He is a good footballer make no mistake about that but good enough for Wales and the Champioship, not for ARSENAL!!
If it is a youth policy, then we must sign the best youngsters in the world and ship out the loads of average starlets presently in the first team and bench.
    - Gunner for life
