Striker holds keeper key

Thu 02 Jul, 04:28 PM

Scott Vernon has emerged as a potentially key figure in Carlisle goalkeeper Ben Williams' proposed switch to Colchester.

Us boss Paul Lambert is holding talks with former Manchester United trainee Williams, 26, after allowing fellow keeper Dean Gerken to join Bristol City earlier this week.

But Carlisle manager Greg Abbott is believed to want a striker as part of the deal with Blues frontman Danny Graham is expected to join Watford.

And Vernon, who has fallen down the pecking order at Colchester, fits the bill for Abbott, who wants a deal in place as soon as possible.

Abbott told the News & Star Sport "Transfers can go on for too long and they can become unsettling for the personnel involved.

"I am anxious to get it resolved soon - and I am doing everything I can to get the best possible deal for Carlisle United."
