Friedel saves pen on Villans debut

Sat 02 Aug, 06:15 PM

Brad Friedel saved a penalty on his full Aston Villa debut before Gabriel Agbonlahor salvaged the Premier League side a 1-1 draw at Reading. The American goalkeeper made the perfect start to his Villa career in the 10th minute, following last week's transfer from Blackburn, when he dived to his right to save a Stephen Hunt spot-kick after Martin Laursen had fouled Bobby Convey.

The Royals went in front 10 minutes before the break when their Turkish reserves star Jem Karacan, 19, was left with a tap-in after James Harper's long-range shot was deflected on to the post.

Laursen and Ashley Young both came close for Martin O'Neill's side after the interval but they had to wait until the 79th minute to get back on terms with the Championship outfit.

Young winger Marc Albrighton was given acres of space and crossed for Agbonlahor who tucked the ball away neatly.

Harper almost won it in injury-time for Reading but his stabbed effort from a corner was cleared on the line by Agbonlahor.

Nicky Shorey, reportedly wanted by the Villans along with West Ham and Portsmouth, was left out of the squad without an explanation.

  1. I'm A villa supporter... Was Carson worth £10mil? To Liverpool - yes to West Brom he was only worth £3.75mil. Did Liverpool intend to keep Carson? obviously not as they were willing to accept such a big reduction in fees. Were Liverpool trying to pull a fast one in the asking price? Possibly, but who in any business wouldn't try to get more money for something that they have, that someone else wants? thats business! what ever counter offer was forwarded by MON was not acceptable to Liverpool! so then the role is reversed... Is Gareth Barry woth £18mil? To Villa - yes. Would I keep Barry if that was an option? Yes - He's a good player. If it is dependant on him moving that Liverpool pay £18mil then thats what they have to do. Barry is our player until his contract expires. If Rafa wants him, then stump up the cash. It is not a hard equation to make if you want him, pay for him. Unlike the Carson affair, we want to keep Barry and knock Liverpool from that 4th spot. So theres no question of sour grapes or what is worth what, if you want him that badly pay the asking price. MON has been consistant in saying Barry in in his plans (for deposing Liverpool) so will not sell him for less that what he's worth to us. £18mil is approx £2mil more than losing out in the last 16 of the chapions league. So Liverpool are there but how far will they go, and how much further do you think you'll go if Barry is in the squad? if the answer is "all the way" which is what we hear all the time from the reds!!! (Sorry couldn't help that!) then Rafa should pay up as the Liverpool would get double that in revenues. if, as some predict, liverpool would only make the last 16 this year without Barry then the answer is again simple pay up and get the added revenues! YOUR CALL RAFA

  2. Mikeknoot2508 what are u on about O'neill has got Vila to our best position in years and you want to throw that away. O'neill has also done his best to keep Barry at the club but he wants to go and we don't want players who mouth off in the press and don't want to play with us. So now we can sell Barry and bring in some quality players with the money!!

  6. mikeknott2508 you are an idiot!!how well did we do before O Neil came to villa park at least we have a manager that looks capable of taking as somewhere...
if you want someone to vent your anger at do it at Barry the guy has clearly gone back on his word and i have now lost all respect for him he's not fit to even be classed as a villa player anymore,
I ask you what more can O Neil do he can't force the traitor to stay at villa park and tbh i wouldn't want him there as i'm sure many true villa fans feel the same..
the sooner liverpool takes the scum off our hands the better....

  8. O Neil ur a disgrace DO ALL VILLA FANS a favour and resign so as we can have a manager who is willing to stand up to players and other so called bigger clubs, at this rate we'll be lucky if we sign any decent players or we have any top class players left at the park. with the way you have handled the barry affair since the end of last season is disgusting IF as you say you have villa at heart why were you in switzerland and not at home making the big name signings that have been promised i believe if you had done so Gareth would not be looking for a move, how many transfer windows are you going to let go by before you get a right you've already had three its not as if the money is yours is it. so prove me wrong.
