Trotters propose swap to Baggies

Sat 02 Aug, 12:00 PM

Bolton have proposed a swap deal to West Brom which would see Abdoulaye Meite move to The Hawthorns and Jonathan Greening head to The Reebok. The Baggies are keen to sign Meite and have already had two cash bids of £1.25million and £1.5million rejected for the commanding centre-back, who fell out with manager Gary Megson last season.

And Bolton have now set out their demands for the Ivory Coast international.

"They made a bid and we didn't accept it, but Phil (Gartside, Bolton chairman) got in contact and asked whether we could do a straight swap," Megson told the Bolton News.

"The offer is with them now, so that is where we are with it."

Reports have linked both full-back Paul Robinson and midfielder Greening with moves to Bolton in exchange for Meite.

But former Watford left-back Robinson, who only has a year left on his current Albion contract, has reportedly been in talks with SPL champions Celtic.

Baggies boss Tony Mowbray is eager to add to his defence after missing out on the signing of Madjid Bougherra, who opted for Rangers earlier this week.

But he is unlikely to let his club skipper Greening join the Trotters, and may instead urge chairman Jeremy Peace to up the ante for Meite, who is rated at £2million by Megson.
